District Governor's Club visit

Wednesday 18 September we gathered at the Riverside Golf Club in Ascot Vale for the traditional

District Governor's visit. Accompanied by DGE Peter Shepheard and Alex Lapina, President of Rotary Activate, Michael was warm and friendly, inspiring us with his speech on The Magic of Rotary and how to make Rotary and clubs irresistible.

There were many highlights on this special night:
1. President Lesley announcing that Peter Cribb has been shortlisted for a Victorian Senior of the Year Award.

2. Presentation of a RI Presidents citation to PP Shraddha.
3. Welcome to new member Deborah Ryan and her induction bythe DG.

4. Welcome to prospective member Hayden Smith, a former Exchange student.

5. 4 youth participants attending - Simeon Butler and Charlotte Marshall Pearson who will attend NYSF in January, Ava {Jo's granddaughter} who is off to RYPEN in October and Sarah Alman, our Del King Scholar.

6. Duncan Hillier from MAC, Maria Silber Rotary Footscray, Chris Richardson Rotary Essendon North and Susan Robb Rotary North Melbourne.

Drew Sheehan was MC for the evening and managed a late and delayed agenda as everyone was having so much enjoyment chatting and catching up on the news. Thanks to Nicole Marshall for the Acknowledgement of Country - always reliable, it rolls off her tongue with no hesitation.

Geoff and Dulcie, Peter and Bev, Beate and Karolina had lots to discuss although we were sad to miss Len who is recovering from pneumonia.
Melina hosted an Op Shop table as we welcomed Frances Stratford, another volunteer, and Deborah's husband Kevin to share the celebrations.

Jeff hosted the youth table with Nicole and Charlotte, Duncan and Simeon and Chris.

Susan Robb provided several moments of delight as she spoke on The Big Serve, and Alex Lapina and Drew showed off their skills with te big racquets.

Ava helped Drew with the raffle - won by Chris Richardson, Deborah Ryna, Jeff Weitzel and Drew. These funds will go to our End Polio event.

Deborah is a Bayswater Road Kensington resident and has volunteered at several charitable organisations over the years.

Books have arrived in the Maldives

the welcome news that the 10 pallets of books and stationery have arrived in Male. They have now been transported to storage and await dispersal.

2024 - Djerring Hub 1st birthday

One year after the amazing opening the Djerring Hub turns 1. What a celebration and acknowledgement of the importance of such a place in our community. MVCC CEO Helen Sui addressed the large attendance and welcomed all with a Welcome to Country to indigenous elder Tony.

Youth Fest with EAHA

We were blessed with great weather for this year's Youth Fest run by Moonee Valley Council at Queens Park.

Collaborating with EAHA {the Eritrean Australian Humanitarian Association} to raise funds for the school in the Kassala refugee camp in Sudan, members took the opportunity for some fun and fellowship along with sausages!

Anwar and John Sklenar were organised early and were soon joined by Nicole Marshall, Jeff Weitzel and Lesley McCarthy. Then along came Peter Cribb and Jo Walker with her granddaughter Ava.
We were delighted to renew acquaintance with Louise Olliff. Sadya and Nohla from EAHA too.

Drew Sheehan brought Haruka Tanaka along and soon Shraddha Sharma joined us too.

Later in the afternoon we were fortunate to be joined by District Governor Michael Lapina with DGE Peter Shepheard and Alex Lapina who all had a turn at the BBQ.

Although the day was quieter than expected, we had lots of conversations, sold lots of food {all options catered for - Halal, vegetarian, gluten free} and shared Rotary.

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month

Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and is essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. Literacy is a significant and specific goal for Rotary. It is so important that it is one of the 7 areas of focus for The Rotary Foundation and has the month of September dedicated to it.

Everyone has the right to learn to read, write and enjoy the power, pleasures and independence of being literate. For some the journey will be easy, for others it will take much hard work and unfortunately for approximately 18 percent of today’s world population, it will never happen.

Consider these facts;
* More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.
* If all women completed primary education there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths,

* A child born to a mother who can read is more likely to survive after the age of five,

* If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills,
171 million people would be lifted out of poverty, which would be an equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty

Container to Puntland

Full to the every brim! The container destined for Jarriban University hospital loaded today. The fantastic DiK team were assisted by Peter Cribb, Jo Walker, Lesley McCarthy with Yasir, Abdullah, Abdullahi and Soraya from the Somali community.

The container will ship to Dubai, then to Garacad and on road to Jarriban. ETA October.

MMVLLEN

Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley Local Learning and Employment Network -

Boyd Maplestone, CEO gave us a presentation about the MMVLLEN, which many at the meeting had no knowledge of. The LLEN works to connect education, industry and community and to support, assist and encourage young people into fulfilling employment opportunities. He was joined by Project Support Officer David Fisher {who is also co-editor of FlemKen News}.

Based at 40 Be4llair Street Kensington beside the Town Hall, the LLEN works with a small team.
Funded by the Victorian Government and other organisations and donors, the LLEN offers Structured

Workplace Learning placements, supported pathways learning, industry-school events, mentoring and more. They work with schools across Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley, industries, larger employers and community organisations. Try-a-Trade, the virtual reality platform and summer jobs workshops were very popular.

All present agreed that there were many opportunities for Rotary to collaborate with the LLEN including our youth programs, the Op Shop and identifying placements.

Donations in Kind Open Day

What do 45 clubs from 4 districts, 200 plus attendees and representatives from Government, community organisations, health services and banks have in common? It’s the 2024 Donations in Kind Open Day showcasing the Magic of Rotary in action.

In brilliant sunshine, people from across Victoria and as far away as Warragul, Mornington, Ballarat, Bendigo and Daylesford arrived at shed 39, 400 Somerville Road to be greeted by the aroma of cooking sausages and the welcoming greetings from Store Manager Colleen d’Offay and DiK Inc Secretary George de Souza.

Report on NGO Visits to Siraha and Udayapur: Back to School Program NEPAL

The visit to Siraha and Udayapur was an eye-opening experience, revealing the stark realities

faced by marginalized communities in accessing education. The resilience and dedication of local NGOs like Dalit JanaKalyan Yuba Club and the Social Transformation Network are commendable. Despite limited resources, their commitment to improving educational outcomes for Dalit and marginalized children is inspiring.

The Siraha District is bordered with Saptari district in the east, Udayapur districting the north, Bihar state of India in the south and Dhanusa district in the west. Majority of the population here is Kushwaha(Mahato/Singh), Yadav, Tharus, Sahs(sahukar), Muslims and ethnic minorities.

It is evident that a multi-faceted approach is required to address the barriers to education in these regions. Infrastructure improvements, teacher support, and community engagement are critical components of a successful Back to School program. Collaboration with local stakeholders and continuous advocacy will be essential to create a lasting impact.

As we move forward, it is crucial to maintain the momentum and support the local NGOs in their efforts. By working together, we can ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to receive a quality education and build a better future.

Maribyrnong Valley Community Group combine for National Tree Day

National Tree Day was the perfect opportunity for the clubs of the new Maribyrnong Valley Community Group to come together.

Partnering with Moonee Valley Council on the habitat and wildlife corridor development along the Maribyrnong River at Ascot Vale, Rotarians and friends joined with other community groups to plant 6,000 seedlings today.

These will provide habitat and food for the native birds, small animals and insects which call this corridor home. Leading from north of Melbourne Airport through to Royal Park and the Yarra River, the corridor provides a route for birds and insects to roam and supports the health of the river and those creatures which live there.

A display of posters developed by RCG leader David Dippie showcased the projects of Rotary focussing on the environment, youth and local club projects.

Members from Footscray and Keilor East Rotary provided the BBQ and fed the hungry planters after their work was done.

Presidents from Brunswick Tullamarine, Flemington Kensington, Keilor East and North Melbourne were joined by District Governor Michael Lapina and Alex and DGE Peter Shepheard in discussions on the day and future connections.

District Governor Changeover

Sunday 30th June was a magical event at Ultima in Keilor when District Governor Ron Payne

handed over to incoming Governor Michael Lapina.

Members of Rotary Wyndham had done an amazing job decorating the grand ballroom with all things magical including Hogwarts hats on each table, playing cards, magic tricks and streamers.

We were treated to amazing music courtesy of Eleanor Blythman and Raphael Wong - with the addition of Michael AND his family.

Flemington Kensington Rotary was awarded a District Recognition - Youth for the L2P program.

A large number of awards were made which will be listed in the next edition of Networker.
Highlights were the presence of Past RI President Iain Riseley and Juliet, and former Zone 8 Director Jessie Harman and Andrew who presented Major Donor recognitions - including to Lesley.

Club Presidents Changeover

Friday 21st June was a wonderful celebration of our club's year and the impact we have had in communities both local and international.

Drew Sheehan chaired the evening where President Shraddha Sharma celebrated our work in the presence of a number of distinguished guests including District Governor Ron Payne and Deb, Assistant Governer Tony Laycock, Danny Pearson MP, Consul General for Sri Lanka, Mr. Sandith Samarasinghe, Mr Nihal De Run and Mr Sathanantha Kirupanantha from the BEAP Foundation, Laure Fisher and Sondra, Cr Katrina Hodgson, Moonee Valley Council.

Also joining us were our ARH scholar Catherine Johnson, Yasin Farah, Puntland/Somali Association, Cathy Connop from Farnham Street Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Danni von der Borch - The Venny, Katie Hester, Live for Lily and Dr Francis Aquah MHFA.

We were delighted to welcome Rotarians David Jones and Kevin Walsh from Balwyn, David Dipppie and Deb Sloggett from Keilor East, Larry and Susan Robb from North Melbourne and Peter Boudville from Brunswick Tullamarine.

Stroke container packed

Tuesday 4 June was a big day for us and for Sri Lanka with the loading of the container destined rural hospitals.

After lengthy delays as we awaited beds and other items at Donations in Kind, Peter and Lesley were on hand to fill the gaps with smaller items and boxes of consumables.

The container will be collected on 11th and arrive in Colombo 5 August.

Dr Harsha Gunasekara, the Consultant Neurologist at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital and leader of this project was delighted to hear from Peter.

RYLA 2023

Our Global Grant scholar has returned from a very challenging 10 day RYLA experience.

RYLA is held at Camp Getaway on remote bush near Axedale and about 15 mins from Bendigo at the end of November each year. The program is led by Rotaractors and youth coordinators in the district and provides a challenging sequence of learning and leadership development, challenge by choice and problem solving.

Haruka was joined by Alex Lapina from Rotary Wyndham and met several other like minded and young girls.

Our former RYLA participant Zoe Borghouts was her team leader and assisted her with understanding the program and managing homesickness. She was very glad to see me and slept part of the way home.

Congratulations to Jules Borghouts and Sarah Briggs who have just finished the 10 day long RYLA camp. This camp held at the end of the year at Camp Getaway near Kyneton presents attendees with a range of learning and leadership opportunities and is staffed by Rotaractors {20-30} and Rotarians.

The program is designed to help young people connect with leaders in their community, build communication and problem-solving skills, discover strategies to become a dynamic leader in their community, learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors and unlock potential to turn motivation into action. This is as well as having lots of fun and forming lasting friendships.

Jules and Sarah discussed their experiences in learning, leadership and challenge by choice which have opened their eyes to possibilities for the future.

MHFA for cultural backgrounds

We're thrilled to wrap up an empowering 4-day, 2-week Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training open to our community! The energy and engagement from our cohort were truly remarkable, and we couldn't have done it without each participant's invaluable contribution.

A special shoutout and heartfelt thanks go to our dedicated members #district9800 #Rotary #rotaryflemington for their unwavering support throughout the training.

Big gratitude also goes to #SugarbeatCafe on Langs road for their delicious catering, keeping us fueled and focused, and, of course, to Dr. Francis from the #PostiveWellnessCommunityCentre for his exceptional facilitation, guiding us through essential insights and practices.

Books to the Maldives

We are very grateful to Robert Akeroyd for his generous donations of hundreds of books for this project.

The High Commissioner to the Maldives, David Jessup and his wife spoke to Peter and Bev on their recent visit and made a request for books for schools in the remote atolls. Peter grasped the opportunity and has used all his contacts to source materials.

Peter, John, Shradd, Jo, Abdi and Lesley have spent many hours collecting, sorting and repacking books. The 4 pallets are now shrink wrapped and will join 4pallets of children's books donated by Bronwyn and team in the education aisle, and a pallet of school and student stationery items.

Trivia Night success

There was nothing trivial about the trivia event organised by Secretary Mel Caccetta.

Held at Flem Ken Bowling Club, over 260 participants vied for the amazing prizes on offer, thanks to our very generous sponsors.

With participants from Keilor East Rotary, Rotaract, Farnham Street Neighourhood Learning Centre, Kensington Neighbourhood House, the Abbey Solo Foundation , Kensington City Soccer Club and local community, this was a truly widespread community gathering.

Peter Cribb opens playgrounds in Sri Lanka

Since 2018 Rotary Colombo has partnered with us and several clubs in Victoria Australia to receive and

install playground equipment to deserving schools around Sri Lanka.

On a recent trip to Sri Lanka, PP Peter Crib and Beverly attended and assisted at the opening ceremonies at two schools in Anuradhapura and Nikeweratiyq.

PDG Senaka has been instrumental in coordinating this project on behalf of Rotary Colombo and over the last 6 years playground equipment has been installed at around 50 schools and enjoyed by 1000s of children! Playground equipment has been currently procured to carry out the same at 10 more schools in coming months.

PP Peter Cribb has just returned from a trip to Sri Lanka and took the opportunity to attend the Rotary Club of Male' in the Maldives.

He presented this club banner to our representative Alex on his return.

The President of the Rotary Club of Male' Aimon Jameel has asked for our assistance sending books to schools in the remote northern atolls.

International Womens Day at MVCC

Friday 8th May was Moonee Valley Council's International Women's Day breakfast at the Clocktower.

Our club sponsored 6 students and 2 staff members from Mount Alexander College. They were Principal Dani Angelico, teacher Sarah Radford and students - our Del King scholar Sarah, with Olivia, Justine, Kari, Elicia and Talia.

The panel speakers were excellent and discussed " Count her in" Invest in Women, Accelerate progress" and this resonated deeply with everyone in attendance. The panelists, representing a diverse range of women from various backgrounds and stages of their career and entrepreneurship journeys, truly embodied the theme.

DiK Supports Bellarine Farmers Group

PP Alan Bruno sent through a request for assistance for the Bellarine Agricultural Society, a group he is now working with. They needed chairs for their clubrooms and events. So off to Donations in Kind we go.

Len Seddon also turned up to meet and it was good to catch up with Paul Perrottet again.

Harmony Day at Djerring Hub

Moonee Valley Council celebrated Harmony Day on Friday 1 March with a magnificent community event at the Djerring Hub.

With entertainment, food, coffee, community stalls and a celebratory atmosphere this was a fabulous evening.

Congratulations Sarah Ferdowski for all your effort and for gathering such a great team.

We were delighted to welcome Ms Ching Chan and 11 international students from Mount Alexander College to share our BBQ.

The students were just amazing, Jeff and I had little to do except organise!

Moonee Valley Festival

We had a great day at the Moonee Valley Festival last week partnering with our friends at the Eritrean Australian Humanitarian Association -EAHA. They are raising funds for the school in the refugee camp at Kassala, South Sudan.
Gorgeous sunshine a clear space and a fabulous crowd made this a wonderful day.

Soon it was the turn of Anwar and Abdi to take over with help from Peter. Karolina and Nicole were stuck with the onions - but no tears, this was for a very good cause.

Shraddha came to the rescue with Pay ID for electronic payments, and then Mel brought along the eftpos machine - phew that was $1200 we wouldn't have had otherwise.

We were delighted to welcome Haruka Tanaka, our Global scholar and Viv from the e-Rotaract club who came along to help out.

We were also treated to delicious Eritrean food thanks to Sarah and Sophia.

Lorry Rowe on Philippines Trip

Lorry Rowe, former manager of our Werribee Op Shop is again in the Philippines with her son Shane.

She is visiting several Rotary Clubs and participating in a number of activities to support True Manila and the street kids. Our club has again contributed to the back to school and food programs, dental health.

Lorry has so far attended several Rotary meetings and events and has donated to True Manila programs, Rotary Club of Mactan, Rotary Cabanatuan City and The Inner Wheel Cabanatuan City Club.

Container to Puntland Somalia

The Jarriban Hospital in Puntland is in desperate need of hospital equipment and medical supplies.

Members Abdi Hassan and Mohammed Abbas Oar are leading this project to send a container to Jarriban.

Our request is in the queue at Donations in Kind with an ETD of March 2024.

The club previously sent a container in 2014 which was gratefully received and has made a huge difference to the community. However, war, famine and drought have continued to challenge people here and the need is great.

Shipping is expensive so funding is sought from donors - Jama Farah from Rotary Footscray has successfully raised funds for 3 containers using this crowdfunding site. Please share.

Paul Harris Foundation breakfast

Lesley McCarthy accompanied Global Grant Scholar Haruka Tanaka to the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Foundation breakfast at the Savoy Hotel on 21 November.

Also at our table, Globa Grant Scholars Hikaru Sato hosted by Rotary Glenferrie, Ayase Ishizuka hosted byRotary Alberty Park and PhD scholar Guillaume Gersdorff hosted by Central Melbourne. Ayose has just finished the same course that Haruka is sudying and Hikaru is studing for a Masters in Public Health.

Guest Speaker Peter Hitchener OAM, spoke of his time at Channel 9, his work with Sir Eric Pearce and Brian Naylor, and the old Bendigo Street Richmond site. Peter is a regular visitor to Japan and greeted the scholars in very good Japanese, chatting t them for some time.

Royce Abbey Dinner

Lesley McCarthy, Royce Abbey Award no. 417 was delighted to attend this year's dinner where the 500th Royce Abey Award was presented.

Held at Windy Hill, the room was filled with recipients, club and district representatives and member of Essendon Rotary including the very first Royce Abbey awardee Michael Moloney.

David Abbey gave a heartfelt tribute to his mother Jean who was a staunch supporter of Royce and the program.

The guest speaker PDG Murray Verso gave a Polio update which the good news that cases are again low and mainly restricted to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sadly he also reported on continued outbreaks of the Vaccine derived virus in a number of African countries.

Wednesday 15th November saw District Governor Ron Payne and Deb visit the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington.

Also joining us on this evening were our 3 RYPEN students from Mount Alexander College, Claude, Emily and Tara with Claude's father Nicholas and Tara's mother Christine.

We were also joined by Honorary Member Dulcie Heard, our Global Grant scholar Haruka Tanaka and prospective member Herve Carlos who attended our changeover. Anne Heyes brought along Cathy Connop from the Farnham Street Neighourhood Learning Centre: Cathy has been a regular visitor and Anne recently completed a workplace placement there. Op Shop Manager Melina brought a volunteer Deb who has also visited in the past.

Ron spoke to members about Create Hope in the World and the four Rotary priorities:
increasing our impact, expanding our reach, enhancing participant engagement, and increasing our ability to adapt. He also encouraged us to thinks about flexibility in membership opportunities.

He then presented President Shraddha with the Rotary International President's Citation for 2022-2023 and our Foundation Donor banner.

Member Behind the Badge - Peter Cribb

Peter Theodore Cribb was inducted as a member on 5 April 2006nominated by PP Allan Bruno.
He was Club President in 2009-2010 following on from Mark Ingram.

Peter has been recognized for his efforts with Paul Harris awards in 2010, 2012, 2019, and a PHF with 3 sapphires in 2021. He has contributed to the Rotary Foundation annually since 2009 and is EREY banner eligible.

During his years as a member, he has introduced 5 new members: Anwar Alishek, Anne McMahon, Barbara Champion, Abdi Hassan and Mohammed Abbas Omar.

Peter is honoured for his efforts in the Flemington Neighbourhood Renewal Project, as a Board Member of the local Bendigo Bank and for his efforts in establishing the Op Shop, the RoadStart driving Program and the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds project amongst other activity.

Haruka goes to the Royal Melbourne Show

On the public holiday, I took Haruka along to the show. She had a wonderful experience

and it was hard to identify what were going to be the best areas to introduce her to.

We started with the animals - she loved this, and was very keen to try to pick up a hen. The roller coaster looked too scary for her - it was much bigger than those she had seen in Japan, with lots more hills and twists so we went gentle. She loved the dodgem cars, tried her hand at shooting and throwing games - and won a monkey.

You cannot go to the show without show bags so we did look at those and she decided on 2.

Unfortunately, she isn't yet used to our weather, and did get sunburnt but now knows to wear a hat and sunscreen.

This was a great day out and another experience to add to her list.

Paul Harris Society lunch

Haruka and Lesley attended the Paul Harris Society lunch last weekend.

The Paul Harris Society comprises Rotarians who donate $US 1000 annually to the Rotary Foundation for as long as they are able.

Members gather several times each year to hear from those who have benefitted from the Foundation through a Peace or Global Grant scholarship, a grant or through a Vocational project.

This was a wonderful opportunity for Haruka to be introduced to the Foundation and our district representatives who supported her application.

This meeting's speaker was Hannah Gandy who has recently returned from studying a masters degree in law at University College London. Hannah studi8ed her undergraduate degree in law at LaTrobe University and is now working at the Centre for Multicultural Youth. She is focussing on social justice. She shared with us the difficult and traumatic childhood she experienced and how she overcame disadvantage to reach this goal.

PDG Murray Verso then gave an update on End Polio and the vital role Rotary has played in eradication through vaccines, delivery, volunteers, the partnership with the Bill Gates Foundation and financial support through the Foundation.

Rotary Club of Essendon - Myanmar Projects Delegation

November 12^th to 19^th 2023

The International Committee of the Rotary Club of Essendon in 2023 will be undertaking projects of humanitarian significance in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burma) for the 19^th time since 2001.

Over seven days the tour will cover a lot about the projects which the RCE supports in Myanmar. We will also explore much about the culture, the food, the people and the issues that confront this nation. We will have the opportunity to meet local Rotarians, local traders and more, gaining a better understanding of Myanmar.

The projects for review and attending will be in these important areas of humanitarian aid. Our overall projects will amount to over AUD $90,000 this trip.

Supply of dishwashing equipment to the Mary Chapman School for Deaf where the RCE has contributed funding to the supply and installation of a commercial size Dishwasher for the school’s use. AUD $6,000
Supply of food (purchase of rice and other essentials), children’s clothing, sports balls for the Hope for Myanmar Children’s Home in Yangon. AUD $1,000

Step Up Step Out project. The SISU group has taken over the Dulwich College (who have left Myanmar) and run all there training here. The Vocational training program aims to give young adults low level job ready skills to ensure they get employed in Yangon. Child trafficking criminal activity is rife in Yangon. Children are trafficked for their “human organs” into China, Thailand and India and this project aims to stop that happening. Rotary Club of Essendon has made a significant donation towards this important work. (Over AUD$35,000) so far.

Background SCOT (Stop Child Organ Theft)

The UN estimates that around 700 children are saved from child trafficking each year in Myanmar. These are the lucky ones, the others numbering in the thousands that disappear from families, mothers, schools and neighbourhoods will never be seen again. The Military Government do nothing to control this criminal activity. And the problem is growing as child organ theft is now valued in Myanmar at over a Billion US dollars a year.

The SCOT Project was founded by Rotary Club of Essendon to help reduce child trafficking for organ theft in Myanmar (Burma). This is the priority in they do. Thanks to the generosity of donors, partners and corporate benefactors they work to positively change the lives of children who would otherwise be trafficked and murdered for their organs.

RCE’s connection with the STEP-IN STEP-UP (SISU), a not for profit organisation in Myanmar is the foundation of their assistance to the young people of Myanmar. They take a two-step approach to their project involvement. First, they seek out community-driven training initiatives started by local people to benefit their communities and improve young people’s quality of life. Second, they review their fundraising in a sustainable, accountable, and responsible manner.

Their mission is to raise funding from our supporters and donors to support the vocational training programs for young Myanmar people as well as child trafficking awareness community education programs organized via the Myanmar STEP-IN STEP-UP (SISU) organization. Reduction and prevention of child trafficking in Myanmar while working with Myanmar agencies to disrupt and dismantle the practice of child trafficking Myanmar is our priority.

The SCOT Project is so important for the prevention of Child Trafficking. The increase in the human trafficking of Myanmar women and children has been running in tandem with the economic crisis that has taken hold in Myanmar. Both due to the years of Covid19 and the takeover by the Military of the Government in 2021. On local Rotary advice, children are being more frequently trafficked for the theft and transplant of their bodily organs. The greatest prevention against Child Trafficking is youth vocational training and consequently youth employment.

A connection was made between the SCOT group and the Myanmar based STEP-IN STEP-UP (SISU) Vocational Training Centre who trains young adults in slum areas of Yangon. Since starting the program, SISU has trained more than 1000 graduates, and helped place up to 70% in meaningful jobs.

SISU uses their platform to educate parents, young adults and children about the deceptive ways of Child Traffickers. These measures will limit the child trafficking for organ theft. Myanmar authorities have little resources from Government to stop this horrendous sickening practice. Parents who are extremely poor are offered USD $50 from Child Traffickers who say they will employ their son or daughter in a factory. The child they are told will send money home each month to help with the family finances. The child is never seen again and will eventually be murdered for their organs. Those stolen organs will find their way into China, Thailand, or India for USD $150,000 to $350,000 to desperate wealthy parents who need an urgent organ for a sick child. This is a billion-dollar criminal illegal activity.

Schwedagon Pagoda; Secretariat Building (old British colonial administration building) also the first Myanmar Parliament where assassinations took place back in the 1950’s; Hla Day organization retail outlet (next to Rangoon Tea House) which is an Artisan organization helping support the livelihoods of Myanmar artisans, many of whom are struggling to overcome disability, exclusion and poverty.; Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple reclining Buddha which is 217 foot long and is one of the largest in Myanmar; LinkAge Restaurant & Art Gallery (this place trains disadvantaged young people in hospitality and catering skills); Taukkyan War Cemetery which is dedicated to all those who died fighting the Battle of Burma WW2 from all over the Commonwealth; National Museum which has lots of exhibitions on Burmese History; Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue the last Jewish Temple in Burma; Drug Eliminating Museum; The Myanmar Liver Foundation to talk with the Doctors and staff about their future needs.

Moonee Valley Council's Youth Fest Day was the perfect opportunity to launch the new L2P car sponsored by Flemington Kensington Rotary.

This project has been almost 2 years in the planning and result, impacted by COVID and legalities but is now ready to hit the ground and provide access for young people to obtain the necessary 120 hours of supervised driving practice. Additional mentors are needed to provide the supervision and all members are encouraged to spread the word.

This opportunity follows on from our club's successful RoadStart initiative led by PP Peter Cribb in 2013 and launched at Debney Park with then Minister for Transport, Terry Mulder. At that time, the program was to assist migrants, particularly women, obtain a license.

The evening meeting this month allowed for 2 impressive presentations.

Anton Hocky from RYDA spoke about the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program, its history and impact on educating young people on road safety awareness prior to obtaining their Ps. The approach and data collected was impressive and all of us took something away which was new to us. eg type of music one listens to impacts awareness!

Emma Phillips from Moonee Valley Council spoke at the L2P program and how it is helping young people in Moonee Valley complete the necessary 120 hours of supervised driving. With just 1 car, the challenge has been fitting in the number of prospective drivers and mentors with the hours available.

Rotary Flemington Kensington has sponsored another car for the program and this will be officially launched on Friday 22nd at Queens Park during the Youth Festival.

This follows on from our club's previous work with RoadStart in 2013 which was then taken over by council to become DriveLink.

Member Behind the Badge - Edith Chen

Edith was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. Her maternal grandma was with them and she had a bound feet which Edith only saw from the exterior. She walked with a stick which made “Dong! Dong! Dong!” sound on the wooden floor boards. I was a little runner at home to get medicine for her. Sadly without knowing, I visited her at her hospital bed where I normally would be stopped at the hospital doorway. On that particular day I was allowed to enter. She passed away soon after before I turned five.

Edith was born in Taiwan with mainlander parents. Language wise, I was with Taiwanese speakers who did domestic services at home. My mother spoke her dialect with our domestic head who cooked for us and with her relatives which was a language I used to understand but not now. In addition, my father was educated in Japanese and lived in Taiwan in his younger days, so he was fluent in both Taiwanese and Japanese. Taiwan was a Japanese colony during 1895 – 1945 and my upbringing had some Japanese influences though not in language. Nowadays, one may observe Japan “taste” in many areas in Taiwan.

Her mother had the fortune not to do anything domestically and financially. From her, I had always wanted myself to be self-sufficient and self-resilient. Interestingly, she always emphasized how important it was that her children must all be educated and I believe I have done so. My education and my willingness to work had helped me to gain my financial independence since I was 20. I retired early but was able to make my following focus in community. Edith the young girl.

Opening of the Djerring Flemington Community Hub

The day was brilliant and had a spectacular turnout. In attendance were esteemed guests, including Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten, Member for Essendon Danny Pearson, Sheena Watt, MLA, Moonee Valley Council Mayor Pierce Tyson, Councilors Rose Iser, Katrina Hodgson & John Sipek.

The opening of the Djerring Flemington Hub was marked by a heartwarming smoking ceremony, and heartfelt notes from Mayor Pierce Tyson, and Ministers Danny Pearson and Bill Shorten fit for such a momentous occasion.

During the inauguration, it was deeply moving to hear the reflections on the pivotal role played by our own member and former councilor, Nicole Marshall, and our supporter the late Jim Cusack, in securing funding for this remarkable hub.

In recognition of the unwavering dedication of the late Jim Cusack to our community, the foyer of the hub has been named in his honor—a fitting tribute to a true community champion.

Our team was out in full force to contribute to the festivities. Melina, Juan, Alex, Jeff, Karolina, Haruka, and Shraddha took charge of the BBQ. With the incredible turnout at the opening, we managed to serve a whopping 600 sausages to our delighted guests.

We extend our thanks to Justine, Pania, and John from the Djerring Hub team for the opportunity to serve our community. We are eagerly looking forward to leveraging this brilliant space to carry out numerous community initiatives.

Tour of the Flemington Hub

Vocational meeting at the Djerring Flemington Hub

There were lots of members taking the opportunity to see the Hub.

Shraddha was joined by Alex, Abdi, Ching and her mum, Haruka, Jeff, Jo and grand daughter, Len, Lesley, Melina and Mohammed who met Justine and John, the Hub coordinators who gave us the tour.

Entering into the main open space, we are faced with the Jim Cusack foyer abutted by what will be the cafe. Also on the ground floor, the admin offices, reception, sports change rooms, a children's room and several small meeting rooms. Some of these rooms have an external door which will allow for privacy if meeting with Legal Aid or support personnel.

The first floor has an industrial kitchen allowing for large scale formal catered events. It looks out onto a lovely courtyard space with seating.
The major hall space can be divided into 3 parts with full sound and light systems and a lovely wooden floor. Doors lead out onto a balcony overlooking the sports grounds. There are also a number of larger meeting rooms here.

All rooms have names in the local indigenous language with an English explanation eg Reception=Wominjeka = Welcome.

National Tree Day 30 July

Rosehill Park Wetlands weas the location for this year's National Tree Day event where 3000 seedlings and 3 mature trees were planted.

Drew, Haruka, Jo, Shraddha and Samira, Lesley, Anne, Janet and Alex joined members from Rotary Keilor East, the Friends of Steele Creek, guides, scouts and members of the local community in this MVCC organised event.

Holes were pre dug and seedlings placed ready for planting by MVCC workers. There were a number of displays and supportive booths available including activities for children.

Uncle Dave gave a wonderful Welcome to Country with a traditional smoke ceremony using local leaves. He gave us a wealth of information about the basis for the welcome and what it actually means.

Volunteer lunch

In recognition of the amazing work of our Op Shop volunteers we held our annual Volunteer Week lunch at Mama Bear of 10 July.

Manager Melina Caccetta and President Shraddha Sharma welcomed all and thanked our volunteers.

Board members Lesley McCarthy, Edith Chen and Sandy Belcher also attended to acknowledge those present.

We also welcomed Global Grant scholar Haruka Tanaka from Japan who enjoyed the social opportunity.

Pillow cases for seed collection

The Op Shop assists Bili Nursery by supplying excess/lower quality pillow cases for collecting native seed.

Bili Nursery is a part of Westgate Biodiversity - an organisation focussed on regenerating inner city vegetation and community education.

We produce around 150,000 plants per year for our local council projects, as well as initiatives for

oala habitat restoration, climate change actions and educating local community members and school groups on environmentally friendly approaches to boost the local ecosystem.

We really appreciate the help that Rotary Flemington has offered over the past 9 months and look forward to the upcoming seed collection season of summer 2023-24 with added enthusiasm as we will be well-supplied to get out into the environment and get to work.

Project BEAP

Peter Cribb has initiated this club international project in conjunction with Rotary Club of Columbo. It is led by Nihal De Run, a previous visitor with PDG Senake Ameresinghe from Rotary Colombo.

The CT scanner installed at Batticaloa requires a major software upgrade {US$35,000} and due to the economic disaster currently being experienced in Sri Lanka, funds are not available.

A lift is also needed to support disabled patients and goods to travel from the ground floor up.

RORP Nepal

The first of the playgrounds sent to Nepal last year has been installed. This project required significant organisation and logistical and geographical challenges.

First the 20' container was shipped to Haldia then to Kolkata then overland to Kathmandu via the Bhairawa customs office. Due to the terrain and geography, elements of the playgrounds were carried by manpower rather than on trucks.

With many thanks to PP Santosh Sharma and the Rotary Club of Tripureswor, this installation was completed at the Gram Sudar School, Gokarneswor.

Thank you to Bob Allardice, Rotary Nunawading and RORP Chair for his efforts in collecting and transporting the playgrounds.

Club Changeover Dinner

There was a palpable sense of fun, fellowship and exhilaration in the room as we gathered for the 2023 club changeover.

President Shraddha was delighted to welcome District Governor Amanda Wendt, Assistant Governor Tony Laycock and Rotarians from Keilor East and West Footscray.

RETRO Christmas in July

RICON Hospitality evening

The Clocktower was filled with excited voices with accents and languages from everywhere as nearly 300 people came together for an evening of entertainment hosted by our club supported by Essendon, Footscray and Keilor East. There were guests from the USA, Nepal, South Africa, Japan, India, France, New Zealand, the Philippines and the UK.

Colin Scobie from Moreton Bay led a team of 22 from the Recreational Vehicle Fellowship Association and Rotarians from country Victoria came along too.

Silvie Paladino was outstanding and well supported by Wendy Stapleton and the Australian Womens Choir. Georgia Byrne was an energetic MC.

Solid Rock and We are Australian were toe tapping items to get the audience ready and then Silvie burst into song. There were tears in many eyes as her astounding voice presented Memories.

This was a fun filled and joyful event enjoyed by all. Many thanks to the event manager Sandy Belcher who pulled the musical and technical components together so well.

Thank you to all those who volunteered on the evening particularly the 6 Bus Chaperones: Paul, Deb, Peter, Helen, Nola who gave a potted history of Melbourne, Moonee Valley and the route as participants wound their way from MCEC to the event.

This year's RICON held at the Melbourne Convention Centre and Rod Laver Arena was another bringing together of Rotarians fr

om across the world.
Our members; President Shraddha Sharma, Peter Cribb, Abdi Hassan, Yvonne Farquharson and Lesley McCarthy were in attendance and assisting on the RORP, Caring for Kidneys and ESRAG booths as
well as enjoying the plenary and breakout sessions, the House of Friendship and catching up with friends from near and far.

It was a delight to meet up with our former Royce Abbey Scholar Jimmy Musiime from Uganda, Shraddha's parents Santosh and Kanchan Sharma from Nepal, Maduri and her team {Nepal} PDG Ajith and Madura from Negombo, PDG Pubudu De Zoysa and PDG Senake Ameresinghe and others.

VALE Jim Cusack

Members of the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington are saddened by the passing of long term Moonee Valley Councillor Jim Cusa

ck after a long illness.

Jim was a great friend to our club and dedicated supported of the Flemington Community.
He was involved in all aspects of community from Farnham Street Neighbourhood Learning Centre to the Residents Association, Rotary and the traders as well as the local schools and community groups. Our sympathies are extended to his family.

The funeral will be held at St Brendan's Catholic Church Wellington Street Flemington on Friday 9 June at 11am.

VALE Dr Theong Low, PHF

Dr Theong Ho Low, PHF was a Charter member of the Rotary Club of Flemington in 1987.
He was a long serving GP in Pin Oak Crescent Flemington and was renowned for his care and compassion, especially in assisting with medical aid to south east Asia.

Theong was an early member of ROMAC - the Rotary Overseas Medical Aid program for children and he encouraged the club to support this work bringing children from Vietnam and the Philippines to Melbourne.

In 1996 together with PP Allan Bruno and the club was instrumental in bringing the Boisin conjoined twins from Papua New Guinea to Melbourne for life saving surgery.The Bosin Twins | Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington (rotaryflemington.org.au)

Theong is survived by his wife, childhood sweetheart Sue and our sympathies are extended to her and the family.

The funeral will be held on Saturday 13thMay at 10am at Le Pine, Gen Waverley.

VALE Peter Michael Donnellan LLB, PHF

Peter Michael Donnellan, a resident of Ormond Street, Kensington and esteemed long term lawyer in Flemington has died after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Kien and daughter Susan.

Peter was a member of the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington from 2008 until his retirement in 2021. During those years he held the positions of Secretary for 3 years and of Treasurer for 3 years. He also provided significant financial, legal and administrative advice to the club and was valued for his strong sense of social justice.

At Rotary, he could always be found at a BBQ or in the Op Shop, was a regular careers adviser at the MAC Careers Days and much enjoyed the social side of life including the dinners, Art Shows and gardening events. Peter was recognised for his efforts with the Jim Hosie Trophy in 2014 and with a Paul Harris Fellow in 2019.

Tour of Duty

The many attendees were treated to an afternoon of fun, entertaining music followed by afternoon tea. Hosted by Marbyrnong Park Bowling Club {thanks to Geoff and Dulcie} this was an afternoon to enjoy with good company, socialisation and foot tapping fun.As well as members from a number of Rotary clubs, Geoff and Dulcie brought along 20 members of PROBUS and many of Sandy's regular followers came too.

Mental Health First Aid Program

Funded partly by a Community Grant from the Federal Government, our club has managed the provision of Teen Mental Health First Aid to 15 members of the wider community presented over 2 days at Kensington Neighbourhood House.

Led by Deb Penglase from The Wish Group, who has presented programs for Central Melbourne Rotary, attendees came away with a much greater understanding of mental health problems in teenagers and young people and how best to support those.

Op Shop opens a Food Pantry

The Rotary Club of Flemington has opened a Food Pantry for those in need based at the Op Shop.

President Shraddha Sharma and Op Shop Manager Melina Caccetta formally launched this project on Wednesday 15th March.

Funded by the club with support from Kensington Market, Cheaper-Buy-Miles and FoodBank, the pantry will provide staples and basic necessities for those in our community struggling with food supply. Melina and the volunteers will manage the pantry and ensure stocks and distribution.

Donations from members of the community are welcome.

The club will continue to support the food pantries operating at Kensington Neighbourhood House and Ascot Vale.

International Women's Day breakfast

It was an amazing event at the 12th Annual Moonee Valley Council Mayoral breakfast organised for international Women's Day. Today's event theme focused on celebration and promotion of gender equity and technology.

We had a students from MAC join us, including Habon and Nasteho, our Del King Scholars, along with 4 year 9 leaders, teacher Maddy and principal Danni. We also had members and volunteers from the Op Shop attending.

This was a great opportunity for networking, connecting with students and other like-minded individuals. The panelists discussed the increasing importance of technology in our daily lives and the rapid pace of digital transformation which provides for wonderful opportunities to transform our world. However, as the world becomes more digital, it is important to ensure that everyone has access to and can benefit from the opportunities that technology presents.
The speakers were:

1. Micaela Muscat, who participated in STEM curriculum and was involved in the NASA Coding Program for Women

2. Creator of digital membership and online community, Women Thriving Together, Natalie Moore,will also be joining our panel

3. Presenter and Producer for Radio 3RRR’s Byte Into IT show, Rowena Murray, will chat to us about her platform

4. Product Analyst for Allens’ Legal Product Lab,Shervie Maramot joins us. Her daily activities are centered in the legal-side of the digital space

Welcome to "Behind the Badge" where we speak with our members to learn more about their lives and what brought them to where they are today.
Today, we'll be speaking with Lyn Borghouts, a long-time engineer, dedicated mother, friend and a valued member of the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington.

Though she’s too humble to mention, it’d be a-miss if we didn’t incorporate Lyn’s contribution to the Rotary Overseas Repurposed Playground (RORP) project. She designed the coding process for harvesting the playgrounds & because of this simplified method the project is adapted with such ease by clubs all around Australia. Interview:

Can you tell us a bit about your background? Where were you born and raised, and what was your family like?

"I was born in Hitchin, England, and moved to Australia with my family when I was just two years old.

I have three older sisters, and my father was a Nuclear Physicist who worked as an engineer in various industries. In his desire to spend more time with family, he explored options to move and that got us here to Australia. We’d first stayed in Adelaide, then moved to Bacchus Marsh.

My mother was also a physicist who worked as a physics lab tech but after she got married, she stopped working due to the ‘Marriage bar’ law in those days. Later, in Melbourne she worked as a bookkeeper at Granny Smith Bread Company”

How about early memories, school, University & career?

“Early childhood memory is playing at our house near Lerderderg River, we were very lucky to have lots of outdoor play time, we had access to creek just behind the house & this use to be where we’d spend most of our time.

Another, very early memory I have is being at badminton with my mum and siblings and falling off a seesaw & breaking my ankle, I remember being mortified to go to kinder in a pram while it healed.

I went to Bacchus Marsh Primary and very soon followed my sisters and joined Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School, that’s also when we moved to Essendon.

Growing up, I saw my dad always fixing things around the house, I wanted to do what he did! So, I joined engineering at Melbourne University. The first day, walking into the Lecture theatre, there may have been at most 10-15 girls in the full theater of 350!
Embracing your differences, voicing your opinion isn’t something that came naturally in those days, which on hindsight, I wish we were able to do.

On that first day of the university, I met my dear friend Sue for which I am forever thankful, and since we have stuck together like glue.

In spite of my strong desire to emulate my father, I didn’t become the handy person like him. I’d learn later, his skill came from investing a lot of time on self-education and practicing the skills he learnt, which I didn’t do much.

However, his commitment to treating everyone as equals and keeping the customer value at the forefront of his work has continued to have a profound impact on me and I have carried this ethos throughout my career.

When did you get married, Kids?

I met Vic at my first job in the Department of Defence, he was a scientist, we met in 1990 and married in 1991, we both decided to focus on work and deferred having children for 10 years. During this time, I travelled to Indonesia and Thailand for Westinghouse Rail Systems.

In 1999 we had Zoe, I took a year off on maternity leave and went back work. Going back after maternity Leave, my role changed, they had me writing standards for each department, which at that time I didn’t enjoy. But again, on reflection, that was best thing that happened as it provided me with this exceptional edge and insight into the working of each departments.

We had Jules in 2002, and I went back to work part time after Jules was 2. When I went back, I trained and took up a safety related job & several others since. i.e., 29 years with these company & 19 years of continuous service.

When did you join Rotary, and what motivated you to get involved?

I joined Rotary in 2017 after my marriage ended and children had become independent. I wanted to give back to the community and was drawn to the breakfast club as it suited my work lifestyle. No one asked me to join specifically; I simply walked in one day and was welcomed by Lesley who recognized me immediately as a mother of her students.

I was very impressed with that first meeting, it was very structured, with Sergeant at Arms, all members are talking about projects. The club was celebrating the huge success they’d had with the level crossing project, the energy was contagious and I immediately felt that I wanted to be part of the community.

What you have or do enjoy most about Rotary

I enjoy the BBQ’ the most because you connect with people; your responsibility is clear and known and I loved having the conversation with people.

What are some of your favourite travel experiences?

I enjoyed the work trips to Thailand and Indonesia, there I was able to live within the local communities and experience the support of the people there and also understand happiness & joy in new context.

Outside of that my all-time favourite place to be is Heron Island, a research station for birds on the Great Barrier Reef.

In your spare time, what do you like to do?

I enjoy reading, watching TV shows and going out to lunch with friends. I also love live theatre and music but haven’t made it to either since 2019.

On my list of recent favorite authors are Alice Pung and Jane Harper

I am enjoying watching Survivor, Severance and Slow Horses

I also love singing and have been a part of various choirs’ group.

If you could make one major change in society, what would it be?

I am passionate about social justice issues, particularly homelessness. Everyone should have access to safe and affordable housing, I think the approach taken in countries like Finland to tackle this issue is inspirational. I strongly feel that the government has a role to play in addressing this problem, we could do it during Pandemic, we should surely be able to solve this in this country!

Who are you having over for dinner, if you could have anyone at all…

Oh wow! My ideal dinner party guests would include Gayle Wurm, an inspirational woman I met through the Nursing Mothers Breastfeeding Association, Australian moral philosopher Peter Singer, lawyer and human rights advocate Geoffrey Robertson, challenges traditional viewpoints. I am inspired by people who have a unique perspective to share.

What are the three most important things you've discovered in life?

Kindness, family, and gratitude are the most important things in life, and that it's crucial to be aware of your own situation and practice gratitude.

What is the most important lesson you've learned in life so far?

The importance of patience and not feeling like everything has to happen immediately.

Polio Plus Society

The Polio Plus Society, a fundraising and recognition program specifically to support the worldwide effort to eradicate polio, is now open to District 9800 Rotarians. Members pledge to donate at least US$100 annually to the PolioPlus Fund until polio is gone from the world. To become part of this exciting venture, simply complete the Commitment Form and continue to donate to this vital program until polio is only a memory. You will receive a certificate and pin; and your contribution will count towards Paul Harris Fellow recognition and Major Donor status.

Inaugural members of the District 9800 Polio Plus Society will receive their recognitions at a launch event is planned for 15 April.

RORP January Update

PP Peter Cribb has shared the latest images and stories from playground installations.

1. Spend It Well - Timor Leste. This is a small charity focussed on funding, constructing and resourcing schools. Between 2009-2014 they worked with Kirsty Sword Gusmao to build 9 schools, and since then work independently under an MoU with the Government. As well as infrastructure, they establish school gardens, provide desks and chairs {Donations in Kind} and playgrounds. Some members may remember Ian Femby, a former member. His son Simon is an advisor to the Prime Minister and is a Director.

2. Cape Town - South Africa.

3 of the 13 playgrounds in the container sent from Mt Martha in September 2022 are now installed.
These playgrounds came from Casey shire and Dandenong Council.

Members Behind the Badge - Geoff Cawsey and Dulcie Heard

Meeting this warm couple at the Sugarbeat cafe on Langs road and walking down their memory lane was an absolute treat. Here’s the conversation with our charter member Geoff and his wonderful life partner, Dulcie.

1. Brief bio:

Geoff: I was born in 1942, in East Melbourne. I changed many schools in early years as my family moved around a bit. I lived early years in Albury in Brighton and went to Bentleigh West, circa 1952. My father was a foundry supplier and also managed scrap metals, my mother was home maker. As an only child found, on reflection now I appreciate the privilege I had of growing up with both parents’ attention, while I do remember during childhood being desirous of the kind of relationship my friends shared with their siblings.

After I finished year 11, my father got sick and during this time was offered a position at W. Brown and Sons, when he couldn’t take the job, the company owner gave me the opportunity to be trained in the same role. I stayed with them for 7 years and learned a lot, after few years, I then decided to form my own company, and GM Causey Metals and Alloys came to being.

Dulcie: I am the middle child, and I think being in that position really taught me to stick up for myself. I was born in Western Australia, my parents had a wheat and sheep farm. I came to Melbourne to attend my friend’s wedding and landed up staying in Melbourne after marrying the best man. My husband passed away young due to complication after blood clot.

Geoff and I met in 1984 at Geoff’s cousins’ place. We were both independent and working at the time.

Geoff has a son from his first wedding who’s now in Army and I had 2 sons. At the young age of 20, I lost my older son to an accident.

My younger son and family live close to us in Footscray, and between us we enjoy the pleasure of having 4 grandchildren. On the work front, I remember working at Coles in Moonee Ponds and to this day it was the best job, I held, the people, the friendships were all very special.

RORP December Update

Lorry Rowe visits Manila

From the 1st day of arriving in Manila we were overwhelmed! Michael Redding from Werribee Rotary was with me as well as my family.

Edwin Nombre, whom you know of from the True Manila Street Children feeding program which he started many year ago had arranged for us to travel with him to one of the biggest wholesale markets in Manila. There we bought T-shirts and were so excited to see such a huge shopping complex. We got lost and Michael was not impressed! Edwin thankfully found us and we were on time.

You will remember my request for no presents on my retirement, just money for the Street feeding program. So I had $590.

When I was in Manila in June with my son Shane, Edwin was in America and his family arranged a small program for my Shane and friends, but I only spent $100 on that feed, but that fed 60 children. Spaghetti, hamburgers and fruits.

The traffic is unbelievable! bumper to bumper AND you need to give yourself at least 3 hours travelling time to just go a few kilometres. Seriously, and the Filipinos take it in their stride, it’s just how it is!

After a quick shower and freshen up at our hotel. Edwin took us to go and collect the food. My granddaughter, her daughter and mother and Shane's girlfriend and Micheal.

We all had survived the market situation and were excited to be involved with the feeding program. It was a lot different with Edwin conducting it, a lot more excited children, they just love him, he's like the Pied Piper. Not just because of the food, they totally look up to him as a father figure I'm sure. It’s wonderful to see how Edwin's family help and support him too.

That first night, we fed almost 300 children and gave them T-shirts. It was simply overwhelming.

Visit to Rotary

Rotary supporting the Food Pantries

Our members are helping feed people in our community through the Food Pantries at Kensington Neighbourhood House, Ascot Vale and at Flemington Mission. Each week one or more of our members provides donations, and at the last weekly meeting several members contributed significant donations of necessities.

Edith, Shraddha, Anne and Lesley take turns to fill KNH and AV while Yvonne volunteers weekly at FM.

The club has made a donation to Flemington Mission to assist with extra supplies in the Christmas period.

Members are encouraged to assist as they can - groceries can be dropped into Melina at the Op Shop too.

Playgrounds to Port Blair

After 12 months in the planning, first inspired by President Shraddha's visit in August 2021, the container is now packed and on its way.

Thanks to the incredible effort by Bob Allardice and a team of people, 15 playgrounds plus 2 extra swing sets were loaded - a new RORP record. John Arena is very pleased as he has most of his yard free again - but that won't last.

Those who helped out during the loading were Peter Cribb, John Sklenar and Sam Nicol from Flemington-Kensington.

Rotarians from other clubs were Ian Armstrong, Jerzy Ordega, Des Shiels, Isiah Lahai, Gerry van Horick, Matthew Gibney, Roger Wilson, Cheryl McKay, Peter Peyton, and Scott Allardice.

Defibrillators for our community

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month in Rotary.

The Board have approved a project to provide AEDs or defibrillators to our local schools and community groups.

The 1st order has arrived and devices will be presented to recipients in coming weeks.

ion was to Mount Alexander College today. Past President Lesley McCarthy presented to device to Stephanie Balaburov at assembly today. She also spoke to students and teachers, telling them of the value of such devices, and how they are saving lives.

Ascot Vale Heights School Scholarship Presentation

President Shraddha attended the awards evening for Ascot Vale Heights School [formerly Ascot Vale Special School} on Monday 5 December.

The recipient of the club's year 12 scholarship was Sebastian Timpano who was nominated by staff for his outstanding efforts this year.

The senior school team have agreed that Sebastian’s growth academically, socially and personally has been outstanding this year.

Sebastian’s efforts to achieve success with his year 12 studies should be applauded. He has demonstrated a high level of commitment towards school, learning and personal growth. Sebastian attendance is excellent, and we are very proud that he has completed both his VCAL certificate and VET course in Food Processing.

Sebastian has a curious mind and is always willing to take on any tasks and new challenges. He has a kind and caring nature and his ability to positively connect with his peers, makes him a good friend and positive role model in our school community.Sebastian will be moving onto a pre-employment training program in 2023. The funding provided by this motivational grant will really boost the potential to support him with the costs of training, travel and increasing his links to the community. Funding will help to create pathways for Sebastian longer term that will support him in achieving his employment goals.

Mount Alexander College Awards Night

Past President Lesley McCarthy attended this year's awards evening at the Clocktower. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and determination of the graduating students after the past 2 and a half years.

As well as the awards, there were a number of musical performances which were just outstanding.

Several of the students whom we have supported or sponsored in the past received awards including Zoe He {NYSF 2022} who was Dux of Year 12; Inas Adil Ahmed {School Captain and MC}, Flynn {Op Shop Work Experience student}, Jacinta Klassen {MUNA], Salma Salaat {NYSF}

Lesley presented the Del King Award to Nasteho Salaat and the inaugural Ted Frank Vocational Award to Anh Tran.

Nasteho is the sister of Salma Salaat who attended NYSF this year with Zoe.

Anh Tran is a Vietnamese student who has been accepted to study Business Analysis at Swinburne University next year.

RYLA Success

Congratulations to Jules Borghouts and Sarah Briggs who have just finished the 10 day long RYLA camp.

Their experiences in learning, leadership and challenge by choice have opened their eyes to possibilities for the future.

Kensington City Soccer Club Awards Night

President Shraddha, Geoff Cawsey and Dulcie Heard attended the presentation evening on 12 November.

They witnessed the great camaraderie, wonderful display of strength, passion and energy among the girls, 2 special coaches, parents, guardians, and the whole community of people behind making this sport accessible and fun for the girls.

Our charter member Geoff felt a sense of pride and happiness in presenting the awards to the outstanding players on the night.
The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington feels very privileged to be able to extend our ongoing sponsorship support to this wonderful club.

Christmas Celebration

A large group gathered at the Maribyrnong Park Bowls Club on Wednesday 30 November to acknowledge and celebrate the year.

Several people tried their hand at lawn bowls or croquet before dinner. Rakesh and Bob showed a good eye for bowls, while Beate, Anthony, and Bill, and Samara and friends were excellent at Croquet.

Many thanks to Dulcie Heard, Geoff Cawsey and friend Lesley for the fabulous catering. This was very much appreciated as was the effort they out into making the room look festive for us all.

President Shraddha addressed the group and thanked everyone for their work this year.
She then made presentations to:
Peter Cribb - acknowledging his efforts as a Mentor to her when she first joined the club.
Edith Chen - as a mentor to Melina Caccetta in her role as the new Op Shop Manager.

She also acknowledged Lesley McCarthy who was Mentor to Yvonne Farquharson.

The Mentor/Mentoree awards are an initiative of DG Amanda and were introduced as part of her DG Cluster visits.

Shraddha together with PP Lesley McCarthy then made a special presentation to Dulcie. She was recognised as an Honorary Member for her 35 years of dedicated service to the club in so many different ways. Lesley then presented her with a Paul Harris Sapphire pin.

We then heard from Ching Chan, Teacher of Chinese and Japanese at MAC who attended with 2 of h

er students. She brought along 2 Temari Balls, created by a friend of hers, Keiko Atcheson, also a Chinese teacher. The balls are for sale.

Melina then presented 'Thank You cards" to the shop volunteers. She thanked them and spoke of their dedication, friendship and community service.

She then gave an overview of the Silent Auction of a range of jewellery. The jewellery has all been donated to the Op Shop and has been authenticated and valued by a Rotarian Jeweller.

Australian Rotary Health PhD Scholarship

Equipping Teachers to Respond to Mental Health Problems in the Classroom – Australian Rotary Health

A new PhD research project funded by Australian Rotary Health and the /Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington PhD Scholarship. is aiming to equip schoolteachers with evidence-based strategies to tackle mental health problems in the classroom.

Former teacher and hD candidate Catherine Johnson knows first-hand about the impact a student’s sense of wellbeing has on their ability to learn and reach their potential.

“When I started in the classroom, my training did not prepare me for the complexity of student concerns and needs that arose, which led me to want to explore how to best provide training to teachers in supporting student mental health,” Ms Johnson said.

President Shraddha's Food Pantry Project

We all know people who are struggling to put food on the table at the moment. The 3 local food pantries: Ascot Vale Little Pantry, Flemington Mission and Kensington Neighborhood House are supporting hundreds of local families weekly.

Shraddha's request is that we who a

re fortunate support where we can by bringing a grocery item to each meeting. Each month, we will donate these groceries to one of the pantries.

This week, Edith and Lesley took in our donations to Kensington Neighourhood House.

Lesley was presented with a framed memento at the breakfast meeting this week by Nicole Marshall.

City of Melbourne Awards

Earlier this year Lesley applied to the Awards for the op Shop under the category of Sustainability. The submission was well received and we were shortlisted for an interview. Lesley presented against the criteria at interview last week. See presentation here.

Our Op Shop is a hub for the circular economy and sustainability through our many connections - almost octopus like with our tentacles. Did yo know how many partnerships and connections we have made?

RIMERN helps one of our Somali families

PP Peter Cribb received a phone call from one of our Somali contacts, Ibrahim Hussein from OzSomCare seeking assistance for a family whose house had been destroyed by fire.

RIMERN quickly came to the rescue and yesterday Ibrahim and Rashid collected furniture, mattresses and household goods for the family of 6. They had been sleeping on the floor! So, free of charge - mattresses and bases, fridge, washing machine and microwave, bed linen, bedside tables, sofa, armchairs, coffee table and kitchen goods. All donated to RIMERN from our wonderful volunteers.

Thank you to Sue Robb who picked and packed and made this happen so quickly!

the most significant award a Rotary club can achieve, for 2021-22.

This past year, your club demonstrated a commitment to achieve its goals, which ultimately helps strengthen Rotary and shape our future.

Rotary and UNICEF Sri Lanka partnership

Rotary International and UNICEF are partnering to deliver lifesaving medicines, clean drinking water, education materials and other critical supplies to children and families.

The partnership will capitalize on Rotary International ‘s global network along with the alumni of Sri Lanka’s leading schools to raise funds from the Sri Lankan community living overseas.

Donors can also donate through the online platform www.lifelinesrilanka.rotary.unicef.org.au to give a lifeline to Sri Lankans during the current crisis.

UNICEF will use the collected funds to procure essential medicines, medical equipment, water purification tablets, and school stationery to support vulnerable communities facing severe shortages across the country.

The partnership was launched ON 22nd August in Colombo by UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, Mr. George Laryea-Adjei and UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative, Mr. Christian Skoog together with Zone Director of Rotary International, Mr. A S Venkatesh, and Sri Lanka Rotary District Governor Ms. Pubudu de Zoysa.

Member Behind the Badge - Yvonne Farquharson

vonne was born in Mount Beauty, where her father was working on the Snowy Hydro Scheme; the 3rd of three daughters with a younger brother. The family moved to Ballina in New South Wales where she completed all her schooling. Her father is 99 and still lives in Ballina; her mother died in 2015.

Yvonne has been married to Bob, an Agricultural & Resource Economist for 44 years and they have 3 adult children (a geotechnical engineer, an archaeologist, and an editor in the publishing trade) and 4 grandchildren who live in New South Wales. Education is a big part of our family life!

Yvonne gained a BA from the University of New England and a Diploma of Education at the University of Canberra. Her whole working life has been in education, mostly teaching in high schools and primary schools. Her last role was as VCE Coordinator at Gilmore Girls College, Footscray.

Congratulations Jimmy!

A Royce Abbey Vocational Scholar success story. Jimmy has just been inducted as President of his Rotary Club.

Jimmy came to Melbourne in March 2015 from Kabale Uganda and spent 3 months based in the Otways. Then President Hugh Stewart and his family who are heavily involved in agroforestry and landcare in the Deans Marsh - Yan Yan Guurt area arranged a number or vocational visits and learning opportunities. Jimmy attained a MasterTree Grower Certificate as well as participating in a number of agroforestry experiences. Together with PP Allan Bruno, a number of experiences were arranged for Jimmy during his time here.

Hugh's brother Andrew had spent time in Kabale exploring forestry initiatives there and had met Jimmy.

Jimmy wasn't a Rotarian before his visit but joined soon after and has been Secretary of his club as well s working on youth and community service projects. His family are immensely proud of his achievements and so are we - and delighted to report on his achievements since then.

Sputnik Girls Home

An international project which our club supports is the Sputnik Girls Home and school in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka.
This connection began in 2017 when PP Peter Cribb met Dr Esantha Ariyadasa through friends in Adelaide. This led to the shipping of a 40' container filled with educational materials from donations in Kind - and a playground. Thus began RORP.

With the extreme d

ifficulties experienced this year in Sri Lanka, Eshantha reached out to us for assistance. A donation fro the club matched by donations from Rotary Nunawading, Bob Allardice, Jim & Liz Alvey and Peter & Bev Cribb has allowed the home funds to provide a sustainable supply of food; and to complete some much needed work at the home. The library now has shelves, the girls now had wardrobes for their belongings and there is security.

Keating, Editor of Flem-Ken News for 18years was presented with a Community Service Award {and chocolates}. She has been a dedicated link in the Flemington and Kensington communities sharing stories, celebrations and connecting people. Mary is retiring at the end of this year and we hope to entice her to participate more in Rotary.

Op Shop Super Spring Saturday Sale

We were blessed with beautiful weather despite the forecast of rain. Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to the success of the day!

Arriving early, Mel and Alex were already hard at work organising marquees and stalls. After help from Geoff the Coffee Van man with reversing the trailer, the BBQ was set up and ready to go when John Sklenar and Peter Cribb arrived. They were ably assisted by Geoff Cawsey and Dulcie Heard.

The book sale covered 3 large tables with more on the ground - Mel has been collecting books for a year so there were plenty to be found in all interest areas. Debra Ryan was assisted by volunteer Molly.

Shraddha and Lesley 'floated' from table to table as the need arose and were helped by Mel's Godson Anthony and his mother Carmela.

Karolina and Edith arrived at lunchtime and Edith brought along Carol Qi and a friend to help on the BBQ after Peter left for basketball finals.

The Coffee &

scones van did a roaring trade and their tables and chairs were appreciated. Funda Ozkan Tokatlii from Funda Art & Craft had a fabulous stand with many hand-painted watercolour art works, cushions and jewellery. She and her daughter were keen participants. We were also joined by Rubina from Jobs Victoria who met many of the attendees and made great connections.

Inside the shop, Mel had a huge array of plants {some donated by Bunnings Maribyrnong, some from Lesley and others} vegetables and herbs from the Kensington Garden and the mini repair hub set up in the back room.

MentorMatch is a social enterprise purpose built to manage the International Student Mentoring Program.
It follows the very successful Victoria Police & Ambulance mentoring programs run by Central Melbourne for many years. This is an exciting new collaboration from Rotary delivering an innovative mentoring program to international students.

It offers an opportunity for Rotarians seeking to “give something back” and provides an opportunity for clubs who are interested in mentoring but were unable to participate in previous programs.

National Tree Day

There was a buzz in the air and lots of chatter as a huge number of community volunteers joined in this National Tree Day event. The plan was to plant 3000 seedlings as part of the Greening the West and increasing tree canopy and wildlife habitat programs. Well we did!!

Rotarians from Flemington Kensington, Keilor East and Carlton were joined by District Governor Amanda Wendt from Rotary Melbourne and DGEN Michael Lapina and son Alex from Rotary Wyndham. Mayor Samantha Byrne got her hands dirty and was joined by Ben Carroll MP for Keilor and Danny Pearson MP for Essendon.

Milly Burke, MVCC Conservation Programs Officer and her amazing team of workers had predrilled holes, laid out tubestock and spread mulch. From there it was just a matter of grab your gloves and trowel, a watering can and get planting - which everyone did.

Many thanks to the fabulous team from Keilor East for cooking and serving the sausage sizzle to very grateful planters and workers: David Dippie, Ginny & Alex Billson, Marianne Potgieter, Yvonne Osborn and Tina Ballos.

It was great to see regular partners Moonee Valley Sustainability and the scouts and cubs from Strathmore.

District Governor's Changeover

Shraddha and Lesley joined Rotarians and their partners rom clubs across District 9800 to celebrate the 2021-2022 year of "Serve to Change Lives" and welcome incoming District Governor Amanda Wendt as she asks us to "Imagine Rotary".

District Governor Dale announced a number of presentations and Paul Harris Awards, the Champions of Change, and then the District Recognitions,

It was great to catch up with friends from other clubs too including Austen Burleigh and Peter Boudville, and with Keilor East Presideent Deb Sloggett and PE David Dippie.

2022 Club President's Changeover

It was a night to remember! Thank you to all the members, family, friends, volunteers and community embers who came along to celebrate the 2021-2022 year.

We farewelled Lesley McCarthy and welcomed Shraddha Sharma in a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Everyone was so happy to get together again and to have the chance to catch up.

We welcomed Cr Katrina Hodgson from Moonee Valley who gave the Acknowledgement of Country. Danny Pearson MP and Nicole Marshall.

Assistant Governor Tony Laycock have the Rotary Toast and assisted Lesley with formalities. David Dippie, Keilor East; Michael Redding: Werribee and Colin Styles: Hoppers Crossing also joined us.

Kensington City Soccer Club

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington accepted a request for sponsorship of the Kensington City Soccer Club. It was seen as a way of supporting and encouraging young g women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to participate in sport.

Our sponsorship is targeted at young women from disadvantaged socio economic backgrounds and contributes towards their membership and playing fees as well as their uniform.

These young women develop physical skills at soccer, as well the social and relationship skills which result in being part of a team which trains, plays and then socialises together.

RIMERN Update

Last week, Edith Chen, Carolina Sevcikova, Shraddha Sharma and I volunteered at RIMERN in East Brunswick. We joined members from the Rotary Clubs of Glenferrie and Preston on organising, sorting, cleaning and packing goods.

It was an enjoyable, friendly afternoon and not hard work. Thanks to Ros McMaster for your encouragement All members are free to participate and encouraged to attend on Thursdays when our team is rostered on.

David Whiting (RC of Keilor) has offered to make the necessary changes to the Standard Club Constitution and Bylaws for clubs to implement. These changes will comply with the requirements of RI and Victorian legislation.
The updated Manual of Procedure will be published in English by October 2022.

Farewell Lorry Rowe

y saw a large group of Rotarians and volunteers join together at the Fit4 Use Store to farewell and thank Lorry Rowe for her 6 years 8 months term as Manager of the store. Lorry is retiring and moving to Queensland to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Lorrys' role was the seed for the store after she approached PP Allan Bruno with her desire. Allan, Ted Frank and other members soon had the store identified, fitted out and opened with a great celebration in August 2017 under the leadership of then President Hugh Stewart.

Student reports from International Women's Day

Muna	The thing I realized I was that day is that no matter what other people think of a woman, we as girls can build our future the way we want as long as we believe we are strong enough to stand up. And that is what they said at the International Women’s Day Breakfast to achieve most of their goals in life.
Lucia	A thing that stood out to me at the IWD breakfast, is and it kept being brought up in relation to different questions, was how we need to take the time to listen to each other. IWD is about celebrating the achievements of women and striving for equality between all genders and people and we can’t achieve equality or make big achievements if we don’t support each other. By listening to others, we empower them and offer our empathy, helping them achieve their best and get through hard times.
Amelia	The International Women's Day Breakfast was an amazing experience, but one of the things that really resonated with me was how we were talking about the idea of the superwoman. The pressure that women have to be able to do it all. The way they have to do well at work or school, raise a family and please everyone. The idea that women need to be perfect or they are not good enough. That really resonated with me because growing up I witnessed my mum doing it all. That's what I strive to be like when I grow up. But I don't think it's fair to put this pressure on girls, it's ok to make mistakes and be who you are.
Habon	Something that resonated with me was that women can do what they want to do without having to be a superwoman. The fact that yes you could do many great things and you can achieve lots of your goals nothing can stop you. But, at the same time, you could be a human being, you could make mistakes, you can fail at some things. No one is perfect and the fact that you as a woman are pursuing dreams that many are not should not make you feel like you have to always be great and achieve perfection.

VALE Ted Frank

VALE Theophil Richard Frank 8 February 1948 - 10 March 2022

Ted Frank passed away on Wednesday 10 March following a stroke in late 2021.

Ted was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Flemington and was made a Life Member in October 2021 in recognition of his 33 years of dedicated service to the club, to Rotary and to the Flemington and Kensington communities.

Ted was awarded a number of recognitions by the club including a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire, a Room 711 Award and the Jim Hosie Trophy on 3 occasions.

For 35 years, Ted has been an enthusiastic, hard working and tireless member of the club participating in every activity and using his knowledge of the people and businesses in Flemington Kensington to gather support for activities.

Together with PP Allan Bruno, he was a BBQ champion helping to organise and run countless fundraising BBQs and raising 100,000's of dollars for club service projects aiding people across the world.

Ted leaves behind his wife of 51 years Helen; 3 children Richard, Michael and Natalie, and 6 grandchildren Matilda, Daniel, Olivia, Alexia, Jessie and Sadie, and a sister Elizabeth.

The funeral will be held on Friday 18th March at 11am at St James Lutheran Church, 416 South Road Moorabbin.

International Women's Day

4 outstanding speakers addressed the audience at today's International Women's Day breakfast hosted by Moonee Valley Council at the Clocktower. The room was full - Rotarians, students and teachers and community members taking the opportunity to join together to celebrate women's achievements - and to realise that although we have come a long way, there is more to do.

Mayor Samantha Byrne's address was on point and challenging and set the scene.

We were delighted to sponsor 4 students from Mount Alexander College: Habon, Muna, Amelia and Lexie together with Stephanie Balaburov, Student Leadership Coordinator.

Other guests were Nicole Marshall and Caitlin, Yvonne Farquharson, Michelle, Barbara and Debbie from the Op Shop, Edith, Carol and Kiran, Karolina and Lesley.

We were also able to network with others from the community, catch up with Rotarians from Keilor East, Essendon North and Essendon, the ladies from Mamma's Kitchen and our council staff.

Club 35th Anniversary

The origin of the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington

In 1986, during the presidency of Marcel Kaye, the Rotary Club of Melbourne North undertook to form a new Rotary Club originally proposed as The Rotary Club of Flemington/Kensington.

Local business people were canvassed and several preliminary meetings were conducted.

Then Rotary District 980 Governor, John King, appointed Past President Jim Hosie as his special representative responsible for forming the new club, which was the first breakfast club in the district.
Rotary International granted The Rotary Club of Flemington its charter on 5^th March 1987.

Of the 38 Charter members 2 members remain: Geoff Cawsey and Ted Frank who were both awarded Life Membership in 2020.

Del King Scholarship at MAC

The Del King Scholarship was inaugurated in 2019 following the tragic death of our Past President Del King.

Del had been a serving policewoman in the Flemington and Kensington areas for many years, working with multicultural families and young people. She had a passion for empowering these young people through education and "walked the talk". She took on a role with our district in supporting the Rotary Youth Exchange program and hosted many international students for their exchanges here in Melbourne. She also undertook the Kokoda Trek with students from MAC and St Bernard's with other police officers on 2 occasions. Del also visited India on a Vocational Study Exchange with PDG Murray Verso.

The Del King Scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering Year11 and covers the 2 years of VCE for the nominated student.

Award recipients have been:
Haniyah Abdou Said - 2019-2020 now studying art and fashion design at RMIT.
Zebin Gebreslase - 2021-2021. Zebib has just completed VCE.
Inas Adil Ahmed - 2021 - 2022 Inas has completed year 11 and will also attend NYSF in January 2022
Habon Sani - 2022 - 2023

December meeting

How wonderful to meet in person again. Several of us intrepid members enjoyed the renewed vibe at Mama Bear in Racecourse Road on 1 December.

We chose not to have a speaker, but allow time for catch up, discussion of projects and activities and for a special presentation.

Past President Anne Heyes was unable to make several presentations at the Changeover - held again via ZOOM - and this was the perfect
opportunity for us to acknowledge the immense efforts and hard work of Betty Kitchener over the last year.
Betty has made an invaluable contribution in her short time with our club, dedicating many hours to the Op Shop and to the success of the Art Show. She has brought husband Tony Jorm along and he has also been a strong supporter. Anne presented Betty with a Paul Harris Fellow certificate and pin and thanked her for all her work.

It looks like women only - but that's not the case.

John Sklenar was on the way, Peter was enjoying the beach again,
Josie, Mel, Sandy and Lorry had other commitments and Lyn, Cody, Geoff Nicole and Len were apologies. Shraddha is still in Nepal.

Op Shop Super Weekend Extravaganza

What a super weekend this was. With her usual verve and panache Manager Mel organised her volunteers and sought outside suppliers for food, coffee, refills and the repair hub. With sandy and Sean providing entertainment, and supplied with fresh produce and plants as well, shoppers had lots of opportunities to grab a bargain - and they did.

Man thanks to Mel and Alex, Betty, Edith, Anne, Carolina, Sandy, Jessica, Barbara, Nahla, Vinh and all the volunteers.

Wildlife Habitat and Pollination Corridor Day #2

Today a number of members met up with Stephanie Way from MVCC to review the condition of our Wildlife Habitat and Pollination Corridor at Fairbairn Park.
We planted another 50 understorey plants to extend the planting towards Flemington.

The groundcover and understorey plants we planted in May are flourishing, obviously enjoying the amount of rain they have received this year.

The mature trees are also looking good and have shown significant growth. Unfortunately so have the weeds, so we spent some time pulling them out.

Our original plan to install some seating was delayed by budget restraints and then COVID but this is now on the agenda again. We discussed locations, types of seating and the possibility of some sort of shelter/shade as well as a water fountain for adults and dogs.

A working bee is planned for early 2022.

RORP - Kensington playground removal

Today several members and 2 friends ventured to the YMCA complex at Kensington where the playground had been donated for RORP. Bob Allardice from Nunawading Rotary, current overall manager of RORP Multi-district brought along his large tray ute to transport the equipment to John Arena's storage yard at Kilsyth.

Armed with a multitude of tools - wrenches, allan keys, sockets, multigrips and as a last resort a hammer and chisel, we tackled the dismantle.

Led by Bob and Peter Cribb who is experienced at this, John Sklenar, Lesley McCarthy and Karolina Sevcikova tackled the low nuts and
bolts while Jules Borghouts and Suba Pragasam from North Melbourne Rotary tackled the higher elements and the 2 roofs.

It was a relatively easy job apart from a couple of recalcitrant bolts which Bob soon finished off with his hammer and chisel or drill.

This is a good fun hands on activity which was over and done in under 3 hours. Bob says this playground will join several others in the yard awaiting a container and shipping berth. It will probably go to Egypt where SA Rotary has made a connection.

Annual General Meeting

Sadly we still cannot meet face to face due to restrictions on the number of people who can be catered for. All our favourite venues have a limit of 10 people, but not to worry.

I have a wicked plan. Think of it as a progressive dinner/dinner party with a twist!

Our guest speaker will be Dr Suresh Marcandan from the Rotary Club of Melbourne. Suresh is the District rep for ARH. He is originally from Sri Lanka and has had an interesting career as a Master Mariner, with degrees in business, law, marketing and education and international diplomacy from Oxford, Harvard and others.

He runs a marine consultancy business. He is a strong believer in the power of education to improve lives.

Our club has agreed to fund a PhD scholarship through Australian Rotary Health focussing on the mental health of children aged 0-12. Applications closed last week and the Board is now awaiting an announcement about the successful candidate. What a legacy this will be for our club and the dedicated fundraising efforts of so many members over the years!!

Supplies for new arrivals from Afghanistan reach Christine at the Wyndham Park Community Centre.
Grocery packs and clothing were supplied from the JET Foundation and Flemington Kensington Rotary's Fit for Use store in Werribee.

Intergenerational Maps

Professor Maureen Ryan from the Arts and Education Department at VU has invited us to participate in this project which has been funded by a grant from Moonee Valley Council.

The projects aims to collect visual and written responses to the important places and buildings in Flemington as gained from long term residents, newer migrants and children.

PP Anne Heyes, Edith Chen and President Lesley have been joined by historian Sheila Byard and others to commence exploring the concepts and plans.

After 2 cancellations due to COVID lockdowns, Anne and Lesley agreed that a virtual event was necessary.

We are delighted with the news that our Corporate Member, Mount Alexander College has achieved such strong results in 2020 despite COVID.

MAC was named as having the most improved VCE Study Score results with a median score of 31.

Together with Susie Cole and her partner Peter, we filled our cars with blankets, doonas, pillows and mattress protectors - all in fabulous condition. 6 car loads of goods were driven to RIMERN in Brunswick East where they were carried up the 2 very long flights of stairs - the lift isn't in yet!

What an amazing donation to set RIMERN up for helping people in need. Thank you so very much to Peter for thinking of us,

Introducing RIMERN

We are pleased to announce our support for RIMERN - the Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network which has recently opened in Brunswick.

We are joining the Rotary Clubs of Prahran, Albert Park, Central Melbourne, Carlton, North Melbourne, Balwyn, Camberwell and Canterbury to establish the organisation.

Based at 32-34 Lincoln Street, East Brunswick this charity provides free household goods to people experiencing loss and trauma.

They may have suffered from a range of crises, including long term illness, unemployment, domestic violence or homelessness, refugee displacement, incarceration or other situations of hardship, such as fire or flood.

The premise is that followed by the Eastern Relief Network in Mitcham and Western Emergency Relief Network in Melton.

Through donations from businesses, real estate agencies and everyday people, they are able to offer basic household furniture, bedding, manchester and kitchen goods.

Referrals are accepted from accredited social service organisations who support those needing aid with the process. Agencies working in the of Melbourne, south Moonee Valley, Port Phillip, Darebin, east Moreland, south Banyule and northern Bayside and Yarra are invited to apply for accreditation and to access resources.

District Governor's Changeover

It was a celebration not only of the year that was, but of the opportunity to get together and enjoy the company of other Rotarians.

Past District Governor Phillip Archer recognised some remarkable Rotarians and corporate partners before welcome incoming District Governor Dale Hoy to the role.

The Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award was presented to Bob Fels from Rotary Melbourne for his many, many years of work on the Peace Scholars program, and a feat unmatched by any other district in sponsoring 41 scholars over the years.

The Rotary Melbourne Fels Peace Award was given to Robert Helme of Rotary Melbourne for his work in the Peace scholars program alongside Bob.

Paul Harris awards were made to Melissa Hocking, PDG Grant Hocking.

Dale spoke of his vision for the year and the focus on service and doing good in the world based on this year's theme of Serve to Change Lives, surely the basis of all our work in Rotary.

World Polio update

There have only been two recorded cases of wild polio virus infection in 2021, one case in Afghanistan and one case in Pakistan.

They were both detected in January. This is outstanding compared to a total of 140 cases in 2020.
More work needs to be done to reach rural and hard to reach communities and the need for ongoing funding to eradicate the disease completely remains.

All contributions will be matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation again this year. Donate online here or contact the treasurer to make a donation through the club.

Together with our partners, we’ve immunized nearly 3 billion children against polio since 1988.
Rotary members around the world continue working to keep their communities healthy and safe from diseases like COVID-19.

We are pleased to announce that we have committed to support RIMERN - Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Centre situated in Brunswick. RIMERN is the brainchild of Rotary Prahran and is supported by Albert Park, Balwyn, Carlton, Camberwell, Canterbury, Central Melbourne, North Balwyn and North Melbourne as well.
The ERNs supply good quality second hand furniture and household goods, to people in need without charge. They assist people suffering traumas include long-term illness, unemployment, loss of home and belongings through fire, domestic violence, lack of family support, homelessness, or refugee status. Authorised welfare agencies’ refer clients and support with collections.

This is a hands on service project which all members are able to participate in alongside our support of WERN based in Melton.
All members are invited to chat to Anne or Lesley about the opportunities.

RORP wins District Award

At the District 9800 Conference on Saturday 1st May a number of awards were given out to clubs which had shown significant action and impact across the areas of focus.

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington accepted the environment award for Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds project which saves a significant quantity of metal, plastic and timber from landfill each year by repurposing playgrounds. See RORP

Congratulations to PP Peter Cribb, PP Sam Nicol, Lyn Borghouts and Shraddha Sharma who have led the RORP team in our club.

Congratulations must also go to every club, council and contractor who has participated in the project since 2016 especially the multi district leaders Bob Allardice, Wayne Jenkins, David Balshaw and Don Shields.

Happy 100th Birthday Rotary Melbourne

At our meeting on April 21st, members celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Rotary Club of Melbourne and of Rotary in Australia.

Rotary100 is a project for Australia and New Zealand with clubs being established in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Wellington this year.

President Anne Heyes had arranged for a birthday cake which we enjoyed after breakfast.

Our Op Shop and Fit4Use volunteers were not forgotten having cake and a celebration too.

Rotary 100 Tree Planting Day report

What an inspirational and rewarding morning we had on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Asco Vale today.

Working with Moonee Valley Council, we were able to plant 100 trees and 380 groundcover plants sourced from the Victorian Indigenous Nursery Co-Op in Fairfield. Council also planted 4 River Red Gums and 6 Banksia on our behalf - 1.5 metre tall trees to give some structure and support for the new plantation. 3 large blue mudstone rocks were sourced from TransRock in Wonga Park and will form both a barrier and seating. A plaque commemorating the planting is placed on the front rock.

Moonee Valley Council Conservation Officer Milly Burke has been outstanding in her support and encouragement for this project and was a joy to work with, as were her crew Aron, Charlie and Ruth today. Councillors Katrina Hodgson and Rose Iser participated in the planting and formally opened the Rotary Flemington Kensington Forest - a wildlife corridor and pollination source for wildlife travelling along the river. Councillor Samantha Byrne also attended.

This project is our club's Rotary 100 Project celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Australia and we were delighted with the support from the Moonee Valley Conservation group and the Indian Environment group who assisted us today. Working together with partners has increased and enhanced the impact of this work and led to the furthering of relationships for the next event.

After 18 months of planning and readjusting our timelines due to COVID, the 3rd Art Show is over!

What a wonderful celebration of community as we shared the creativity of artists across Australia - yes Australia, not just Victoria, with entries from New South Wales and South Australia as well as many from country Victoria. The Art Show Committee members have contributed 1000's of hours each on the many planning, logistics and organisational tasks - a number which will magnify the work of Rotarians in our District.

Together with the World Health Organization and UNICEF Rotary launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined and since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary donates to polio eradication 2-to-1, contributing more than $1.6 billion. We’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine.

What does the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington do?
We have been supporting local and international communities since 1987. In that time our members and families have raised over $500,000 which has been donated to those in need. We donate 99% of what we raise keeping the minimum for admin.

* We operate 2 Opportunity Shops at 444 Racecourse Road Flemington and 135 Railway Pde Werribee which fund our work. These are run by volunteers!
* We run an annual Art Show celebrating and connecting community.
* We work with partners to have a bigger impact.

Hospital Beds to Sri Lanka

Delighted to hear of the arrival and handover of the container of hospital beds and mattresses to assist in Sri Lanka. Many thanks to Laurie Fisher at donations in Kind, the Rotary Colombo and Nihal De Run of the BEAP Foundation for making this happen.

State Minister of Health Dr. Mrs. Sudarshani Fernandopulle officially accepted the beds at the Ministry of Health warehouse. During her short speech she thanked Rotary for all the assistance given to support the Sri Lanka Government to treat the Covid-19 affected patients. She specially mentioned our Rotary Club as well as Colombo. She is pictured with PDG Senake Amerasinghe and President Nithi Murugesu.

Hospital Beds to Sri Lanka

Following an urgent request from the Rotary Club of C

olombo, and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, International Chair Peter Cribb leapt into action. With support from the BEAP Foundation and our club, 2 containers of hospital beds were shipped to Colombo with a further container to leave in January.

As members know, I have a profound love of two countries on this globe: this country of Australia and the one of my heritage, Sri Lanka. I am pleased to congratulate, therefore, the Rotary club for their work on what is called the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds project. It all started with the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington in my electorate of Northern Metropolitan Region, which has been fantastic in finding playgrounds that are being dismantled by municipalities or schools, recycling them, cleaning them up, refitting them and then putting them in containers and transporting them over to Sri Lanka, where the kids can have some playgrounds.

Meetings resume at Crown Street Stables

2nd December will find us meeting again at Crown Street Stables for breakfast. 7.30am start please.

After 9 long months apart, meeting only via ZOOM or phone, or distanced by the ring of steel, we can get together again for breakfast.

Jan and Jonathan are keen to welcome us back with a COVID safe plan. Breakfast will be a choose and purchase your own at the cafe and we will be safely distancing in the Loft.

Thanks to Wayne Jenkins from Pensinsula RORP and John Arena from Arena Gardens who have this week delivered stored playgrounds to Donations in Kind.
Through lockdown, and the inability to transport to DiK, our supporters have collected and stored equipment for us. Now it has been delivered and will be loaded into the container and shipped within a fortnight. We are exceedingly grateful to John and Wayne and the councils and contractors who have stepped up to assist with storage and collection.

We may have be experiencing UNPRECEDENTED TIMES but this has been an UNPRECENDENT EFFORT by so many.

The container will be loaded this week by a team lead by Sam Nicol and a team from RC Yarraville.

Roses to say Thank You

The Victoria Racing Club asked for our assistance to deliver their roses to local community organisations.

What a lovely gesture to say Thank You to those tireless groups of people who have who have worked to support community during COVID.

Following each of the Melbourne Cup Carnival race days, gardeners have cut and pruned the magnificent roses at Flemington Racecourse and with assistance from VRC staff and Rotarians, these have been donated to identified organisations.

The Op Shop and Fit4USe Store have reopened

Implementing a strict COVID safety plan, the Op Shop at 444 Racecourse Road and the Fit4 Use Store at 135 Railway Pde, Werribee have reopened for business.

Under the leadership of President Anne Heyes and Board Member Edith Chen, the volunteers have been hard at work cleaning, tidying and painting to ensure a sanitary space at 444 Racecourse Road.
Manager Lorry Rowe and her volunteers have the Fit4 Use Store ready to open with their COVID safe plan and sanitisation procedures.

Betty co-developed the Mental Health First Aid Program with her husband Professor Tony Jorm, and was CEO until 2016.

She has qualifications and experience as a schoolteacher, a counsellor and a registered nurse. She has a Research Masters Degree in Nursing, a Bachelor Degree in Psychology and post graduate qualifications in counselling. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University in Victoria. She was awarded an OAM in 2008 and an AM in 2015 for her work in Mental Health.
Betty was also listed as one of Australia's 100 Women of Influence in 2008 and 2014, and was listed on the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2011.

Research indicates that 1 in 5 people over the age of 16 have a diagnosable mental health illness.

The RORP Story

The harvesting of playgrounds started with a cup of coffee.

Whilst attending a Bendigo Bank Directors Conference in Adelaide I met with Eshantha Ariyadasa who was staying with friends as he wrote up his PhD on Sri Lankan Social Services.

Dr Eshantha, his wife and two young daughters had spent time in Adelaide whilst he undertook his studies.

Over the course of that afternoon I learnt more about an extraordinary man and family who had originally graduated with a degree in Architectural Design from a University in New Zealand.

Whilst there he thrived in the sporting facilities that New Zealand offered as he was a leading sports person back home in Sri Lanka. This sporting interest led to his establishing and running a Sports College, called Sputnik, on his return to SL rather than becoming a dedicated architect.

This sporting activity resulted in his studying for his Master’s Degree in Sports Science at the time that the Tamil war was ending.
The lack of provision for girls rendered homeless by the war led to his establishment of the Sputnik Girl’s Home near his Sputnik Academy. The success of this home led to him being awarded the scholarship to undertake his PhD in Australia where our paths crossed.

In the conversation that afternoon I learnt that he was in need of support to provide the “sputnik girls” with IT experience as industry in Sri Lanka was rapidly evolving to harness this technology and future jobs for the girls would require them having IT facility.

Rotary can supply those I explained, knowing that Donations in Kind, our facility in West Footscray, received computers from organisations like the Bank of Queensland which Rotarians with a background in IT fully refurbished and made available to need organisations at a low cost.

After many frustrating attempts to “piggy back” shipments into Sri Lanka, we resolved the only option was to send our own container containing the computers with other items to fill the space. The space was more than filled quickly with refurbished sewing machines, refurbished bicycles, etc and a 40ft container was purchased with plans for it to become a community library at Sputnik.

Even after adding bookshelves, cupboards, windows, doors, and, many books and toys, we still had space. In a call to Dr Eshantha he confided that he would love an outdoor playground like the one down the street from his house in Adelaide that his daughters had enjoyed so often. There were very few such facilities in Sri Lanka he explained.

How do you get an outdoor playground??

Through lots of investigations, I learnt that playgrounds were regularly replaced and the old ones where usually very serviceable. I live near Geelong and I worked with Greater Geelong Council and realised the difficulties that they would face in giving a playground to Rotary. Sufficient to say, five donated playgrounds later, we jointly plotted a solution.

They were wonderful! Helpful, constructive and supporting. They are committed to recycling. The council playground at Leopold was disassembled by Rotarians and members of the Geelong MG Classic Car Club. Car club members have the knowledge and the tools.

It was disassembled and transported to the Rotary Warehouse in West Footscray, added to the other items in the container and shipped.
The playground is now a community resource along with the lending library/container that can be seen in the background of the Rotary Sputnik Playground in Kurunegala, central Sri Lanka.

The Rotary Club of Flemington asked itself the question, now that we have shown that sending playgrounds to Sri Lanka is possible and that thousands are sent to landfill in Australia each year, why don’t we continue?

The SISL Project (Slide into Sri Lanka) was born with the partnership of the Rotary District of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Rotary District 3220. Past District Governor for District 3220, Senake Amerasinghe, committed to leading the project on behalf of the District.

If the Rotary Club of Flemington can get them to Colombo, District 3220 would commit to their distribution and safe re-installation throughout Sri Lanka.

Through his connections, Senake was able to negotiate a tax free import agreement with the government.

The sourcing of playgrounds and establishing a procedure was commenced by Flemington.

A member of the Rotary Club of Flemington, a professional Engineer, agreed to develop plans for each playground that saw a unique code assigned to every strut, bracket, slide, ladder, etc.

These codes were added directly onto a series of photos of the playground before it was disassembled.

The photos, codes, donor details, etc were all added to an online file that is available to Rotary in Sri Lanka to guide the safe and efficient re-installation.

An agreement with the Liability Insurance arm of the Municipal Association of Victoria took care of the legal concerns of the donor organisation.

Requests for us to source playgrounds for other countries, one to Tanzania and five to Timor Leste, saw the project name change from SISL to RORP (Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds).

The project needed a funding source to be viable in the longer term. This has been achieved by charging the donor a fee of $500 plus GST for the work that Rotary undertakes in the playground removal. With up to eight playgrounds in a container this levy is sufficient to pay the shipping from Melbourne to Colombo.

RORP now has many supporters amongst Rotary Clubs in all Rotary Districts in Victoria, with many Municipal Councils, Schools, manufacturers, contractors and other businesses.

They contact the RORP team with details of a playground that is to be removed who in turn locate an interested Rotary Club in that community. This partnership is attractive to the local media and the story about recycling, playgrounds and needy kids overseas makes a great story. The local Rotary Club assist with the dismantling after adding codes and transporting from the site and this makes the $550 charge insignificant.

There is no shortage of playgrounds to harvest. Greater Geelong Council has approx. 300 of their own and there are many at schools, kindergartens, hotels, businesses throughout Geelong. With 79 Councils in Victoria it is estimated there are more than 20000 playgrounds and at least 1000 are replaced each year with the old ones currently going to scrap and landfill. They are consigned to landfill as they are unable to be re-used in Australia for legal that involve potential litigation. A RORP partnership ensures the playground will not be used in Australia.

RORP is still evolving. With more people involved it is likely that improvements to our coding, documentation, work flows, etc will emerge and be adopted. As of July 2019, the project is still in need of a warehouse area where playgrounds can be stored, cleaned and possibly repaired before loading into a container and shipping.

The widening interest in playgrounds for Timor Leste raises a cost issue as shipping to that country is much greater than to Sri Lanka and the levy system is not sufficient to meet that cost. A special arrangement for import charges in Dili also needs addressing.

As RORP becomes better known it is expected that many Rotary Clubs will partner us - Flemington Kensington: our club has just changed its name, or harvest and send playgrounds to overseas countries where they are conducting projects of their own that could benefit from a playground.

Badulla Playground

The playground at the Badulla school was formally opened on September 21st. This playground was collected from Ocean Grove and dispatched in Container #2.

Badulla is located in the southeast of Kandy, almost encircled by the Badulu Oya River, and is about 2,230 ft above sea level and is surrounded by tea plantations..

Badulla is 230km east of Columbo and DGN Pudubu De Zoysa and President RC Colombo Nithi Murugesu travelled 6 hours for the ceremony.

Flemington Kensington receives Rotary International President's Gold Citation

Past District Governor Grant Hocking attended the club's meeting on September 17th to present this citation to Past President Lesley and members.

The Rotary Citation recognizes Rotary clubs that support Rotary strategic priorities by completing certain activities. The Rotary Citation is a significant award that honours clubs whose leaders and members show a commitment to success. Clubs that achieve the goals required to earn the Rotary Citation are strengthening Rotary and shaping our future.

For the 2019-2020 year, clubs could also receive the Rotary Citation with Distinction when they achieve the Rotary Citation plus one to three additional goals under the headings; Connect leaders, connect families, connect professionally, and connect community.

Youth Programs ina new world

RYLA 2020 was planned for early December, and while it is hoped that the current social distancing restrictions will be lifted by then, the RYLA committee is mindful that the current circumstances may impact on clubs' capacity to support our program. The RYLA committee have therefore decided to adjust the RYLA program offering for the 2020-21 Rotary year to an online program.

The new program will consist of four modules to be undertaken in shorter sessions over the course of six weeks in February and March 2021.These modules will likely consist of a combination of live interactive sessions and pre-recorded/written content that can be worked through at the RYLArian’s own pace.

Being a Zoom assembly costs are very minimal and so we have reduced the cost by over 85% to only $50.00 per team of 2 students. This cost is to cover incidental costs and prizes. District Governor Philip Archer has challenged the Environmental Sustainability Committee to come up with a safe activity to engage members while in lock down as the current lock down and on-going pandemic has sabotaged many activities. Our response: Colour Your World (in the current world of shades of grey)

* Members grow plants that encourage insects, butterflies, birds, bees and other pollinators while adding colour to your world. Members choose their seeds they want to plant.

* Seeds can be ordered on line (or from your local nursery if ‘click & collect’ facility available). People are encouraged to select seeds/seedlings that promote insects, butterflies, birds, bees and other pollinators; and/or vegetables.
* Grow these plants in the front or back gardens, on balconies, rooftops or pots.

* Engagement will be developed through helping each other with tips, sharing information, posting their photos or videos online and at Zoom meetings.

* Gardening is well recognised for its positive impact on mental health and general well-being.

Congratulations Jennifer Jones, RI President Nominee 2022-2023

Jennifer E. Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s President for 2022-23, a groundbreaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organization’s 115-year history. Jennifer will officially become president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge her. Jennifer says she sees Rotary’s Action Plan as a catalyst for increasing Rotary’s impact.

'As we reflect upon our new strategic priorities, we could have never envisioned that our ability to adapt would become our North Star during what is inarguably the most profound time in recent history,' Jones said in her vision statement. 'Silver linings rise out of the most challenging circumstances. Using metric-driven goals, I will harness this historic landscape to innovate, educate, and communicate opportunities that reflect today’s reality.'

As the first woman to be nominated to be president, she understands how important it is to follow through on Rotary’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Statement. 'I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion … begins at the top and for us to realize growth in female membership and members under the age of forty — these demographics need to see their own reflection in leadership,' she said. 'I will champion double-digit growth in both categories while never losing sight of our entire family.'

The Bosin Twins

The Bosin twins today

25 years ago co-joined twins were born to Magdalene, from a small island near Bougainville Papua New Guinea, which was, at that time, war-torn. A difficult birth meant that halfway through the delivery, Magdalene, was transferred to a larger island over 400 meters by boat, and then a power failure during the caesarean operation forced the completion of the delivery under moonlight! The twins were transported to Port Moresby the following day.

They became the patients who laid the foundation for what has become ROMAC - Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children.

Eaustina and Eusthocia were flown to Melbourne by ROMAC where they were successfully separated at the Melbourne Children's Hospital.

Annual Changeover

Wednesday June 15th saw another first for the club as it has for many other clubs in our District.

On this evening, via ZOOM, we held our President's Changeover welcoming Anne Heyes and her Board.

The changeover was attended by Past District Governor Grant Hocking, District Governor Elect Dale Hoy, District Governor Nominee Amanda Wendt and Past Assistant Governor Ian Ada. Also joining in were Danny Pearson MP, Michael Redding President Werribee, Peter Boudville, President Brunswick Tullamarine, Cathy Hall President Caroline Springs.

Anne's husband John and sons Paul and David with Bec were present as well as Lesley's husband Bill, son David with Erica and daughter Shannon with Duncan.

Lesley had previously circulated a presentation due to the time limits of ZOOM and she referred to some elements in that. Lesley particularly thanked the partners and families of our members who contribute so much to the club, naming Margaret Bruno, Dulcie Heard, Stella Hyde, Helen Frank, John & David Heyes, Zoe & Jules Borghouts and Susan Dang for their contributions.

Playground installation at Buturu, Tanzania

A playground donated by City of Melbourne from North Melbourne was sent to Buturu in Tanzania, to a school on the shores of Lake Victoria.

The Sisters of the Resurrection in Essendon, mainly Sister Hermina who is a regular at Donations in Kind, support this school. They have sent 9 containers to this school and community over the years. Sister Hermina was pleased to share these photos with us of the children at play, and enjoying the same delights that children in Australia have.

The Rotary Foundation Trustees and Rotary International Board of Directors have both unanimously approved adding a new area of focus: supporting the environment.

Supporting the environment becomes Rotary's seventh area of focus, categories of service activities supported by global grants.

It joins peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.

VALE Past Rotary International President Sir Clem Renouf

It is with much sadness that District Governor Grant Hocking reports that PRIP Sir Clem Renouf passed away last night.

As a founding member and charter secretary of the Rotary Club of Nambour, Sir Clem became District Governor in 1965-66, and went on to serve as President of Rotary International in 1978-79.

Sir Clem was a giant in Rotary history as the instigator of the 3-H program that led to the polio eradication effort. We know him as the person who started the goal of Polio Eradication.

What a tragic loss, but what a fantastic life that impacted and bettered the lives of those around him and around the world.
Sir Clem made a difference and changed lives now and into the future.

Everyone in the Rotary world and more broadly will be saddened by this news but also thankful that we were connected through Rotary.

Details of his funeral are unknown at this time, but I will keep you updated as details come to hand.

Happy Mothers Day at Gregory Lodge

The ladies at Gregory Lodge were pleasantly surprised with their delivery of a flower posy on Mothers Day thanks to Rotary Flemington Kensington.

Activities Coordinator Eleanor had reached out to us for help due to the isolation lockdown: the residents were unable to receive visitors to COVID-19 and the need to keep them safe.

With thanks to Fei at the Kent Street Market, Chrysanthemum posies were delivered to each lady and to the female staff on duty that day as well.
Eleanor dressed up and presented the flowers to each resident personally.

through the 2 Op Shops and to Donations in Kind.

Zoe at RYLA

I loved RYLA, but I still struggle to concisely summarise my experience.

Some advice that one of my facilitators gave me when I voiced my concern about discussing RYLA in the ‘real world’ was to say what I learnt.

I loved RYLA, and I learnt to keep doing what I am doing, to listen, to reflect, to be grateful for what I have, and to believe in myself.

Art Show postponed

With the impact of social isolation and the downturn in the economy, the Board has agreed to postpone the 2020 Art Show.

The show will now be held on the last weekend of March and run in conjunction with the Kensington Festival to present a Flemington Kensington celebration.
We are grateful to the City of Melbourne for a grant to support this event.

The show will be held at Kensington Town Hall as planned and include a number of arts events and activities at local venues.

Gallery 247 will still be the vehicle of management of art works.

Sewing Machines for Sri Lanka

International Women's Day in Negombo Sri Lanka this year was marked by an extra special event thanks to the Rotary Club of Negombo.

Inspired by Mudara Weerasinghe, a member of the Rotary Club of Negombo and daughter of the District Governor Elect Ajith Weerasinghe, the first ever celebration and luncheonwith a Women's Empowerment Seminar, guest speakers and a trade fair for IWD was held on March 8th in Negombo. A very special guest, Mrs World, Caroline Jurie, a former a Sri Lankan actress and mother of one made presentations.

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington contributed to the unique event by funding the purchase of industrial sewing machines presented to several deserving women. These machines will enable the recipients to earn an income and support their families.

Donate to our causes

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington is a community service organisation working in and around the communities of Flemington, Kensington, Ascot Vale, North and West Melbourne and Moonee Valley. Over 34 years we have supported local residents through education and literacy, health and wellbeing, maternal and child health, disease prevention and eradication, peace and conflict resolution and improving the lives of people in need. We fundraise to support our projects, through Bunnings BBQs, our Op Shops at 444 Racecourse Road Flemington and 135 Railway Avenue Werribee. We run raffles, assist other community groups and obtain funds through a number of innovative activities. Our members are all volunteers.

In 2019, we were acknowledged as a charity by the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission and are thus able to offer a tax deduction for gifts over $2. Every dollar we raise through fundraising is returned through our works.

We also support the Rotary Foundation which provides grants to groups delivering chartable work; to the End Polio Now program which has almost eradicated polio from the world, to Donations in Kind who source and donate educational and medical goods to those in need and to the Western Emergency Relief Network which provides household goods for people suffering trauma and loss.

Rotary in the time of COVID-19

Life as we Rotarians have known it has come to an abrupt standstill. Instead of travelling many kilometres each week on Rotary work - Donations in Kind, WERN, the Op Shop or Ft4 Use Store, collecting playgrounds, books or donated goods, we are suddenly housebound. While many of us continue to work by phone and computer, the hands on and socially fulfilling work has stopped.

How are we filling our time now?

We know that many of us are still working - whether onsite or at home.

VALE Ron Stark

It with great sadness that Rotarians heard of the passing Ron Stark, of the Rotary Club of Brighton who died on Monday morning after a brief illness. 

Ron was a long standing and popular member of their club who set up the Club’s Front Desk and website. He also served on the District Leadership Team for a number of years, and was responsible for  Public Image & Communications and the district website. His company’s software is used by a number of Rotary Clubs, and is the system for many of the Art Shows in Australia through Gallery247

We utilised Gallery 247 for our art Show last year and Anne McMahon had many meetings with Ron and his team.

Meetings via ZOOM

COVID-19 has brought many changes to our lives and has reduced what we as Rotarians thrive on; that is friendship, fellowship, helping others and having fun while doing so.

Well, we may be housebound, working from home or still navigating our way to work albeit more carefully than previously, but we aren't meeting and that is sad.

The Board met today via ZOOM and despite a couple of teething issues had a great discussion and saw each other's faces

Shine On Awards

Congratulations to Lucinda Simpson from Ascot Vale Special School on winning the Youth Category at this year's Shine On Awards.

We nominated Lucy on the recommendation of her teachers and Principal and she was chose for her contributions and dedication.
Unfortunately, the awards celebration was cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions but we hope to welcome Lucy to one of our meetings later this year.

Coronavirus update

On advice from the our Occupational Health & Safety consultant, the board has decided to close both the Op Shop and the Fit4 Use Store until further notice. This is to ensure a safe workplace for Sam and Lorry and our volunteers. Whilst this will result in a loss of income for the club, we felt that it was better to err on the safe side.

We have also pressed "pause" on the Intergenerational/Multicultural Choir at 18 Anthony Street. This choir has proved a great hit with our senior Chinese participants, the children and staff from the Kensington Children's Co-Op and Gregory Lodge residents but considering the age groups involved, once again safety first.

We have also ceased our fortnightly meetings at Crown Street Stables until further notice. I have notified our prospective guest speakers of the cancellations and will re-engage them later in the year.

I encourage all members to keep in touch by phone, email of Facebook as your choice of communication. If there is a interest, we could arrange a "Zoom" meeting at an agreed time.
For those of you still working and in regular face to face contact, be aware and stay healthy.

I am sure you will have heard by now of a raft of event cancellations:
1. The District Conference to be held in Bendigo was cancelled some weeks ago on advice to restrict gatherings of over 500 people. Sincere thanks to all those people who put so much time and effort into the planning for and organising of this conference. Commiserations to District Governor Grant Hocking and his club.

2. The Rotary International Convention scheduled for early June in Honolulu has also been cancelled. This event was planned to host approximately 30,000 people so the cancellation is a blow not only to Rotarians, but to the Honolulu community.

3. The Kensington Festival scheduled for 29th March has been cancelled.

4. The Flemington Traders Cultural Event planned for March 28th has been cancelled. Please continue to support our local businesses and the Flemington Traders who support our club. https://www.facebook.com/FlemingtonTraders/

5. The Moonee Valley Art Show presented by the Rotary Clubs of Keilor East and Essendon and planned for April has been cancelled.

Volunteer with existing charities

RMIT University Health Transformation Lab deputy director Matiu Bush founded One Good Street and recommends seeking out established organisations
to offer help. "Many people are motivated to form collectives at the moment, but my advice is to be collaborative and respectful to groups who have been
working in this space for years," he says. "Groups like Rotary, the Red Cross, volunteer home visitor schemes, are all parts of society that are already
working to reduce isolation and loneliness in older people. "We can share resources and tap into those groups because they have the smarts on how to

And when the pandemic passes? Mr Bush says the best thing we can do, is keep checking in on our neighbours. "What everyone should be working
towards is a deeper connection and more meaningful connection after the pandemic is over," Mr Bush says. "That's important because you don't want to
introduce a whole lot of new people to someone in their 80s or 90s and then for all of those people to vanish afterwards, because that's introducing more
loss into those people's lives. "There will be other challenges for communities and the idea is to forge connections that will last that are based on respect,
understanding and the importance and value of older people in our community."

Relationships Australia national executive officer Nick Tebbey says letterbox drops are an ideal way to offer help as they allow social-distancing and give the recipient a chance to tell you what they really need. But remember — before you go spreading love, you need to follow official health guidelines to make sure you're not spreading anything else.
Services you can offer that don't involve physical contact might include:

Delivering groceries or medical supplies;
Mowing the lawn or helping in the garden;
friendly chat over the fence (at a distance of at least 1.5 metres) or on the phone.

Diary of an Accelerating Implosion Cribb version

Tues 10th March

As we watched the ‘toilet-paper’ crisis in Melbourne emerging as a result of the COVID-19, we wondered if our planned trip starting tomorrow would/should proceed? Thorough checking with all venues confirmed it was still “on” and so our travel insurance would not cover our cancelling the trip, but did cover any medical issues from the virus, we resolved to go! After all, we could contract the infection staying at home! We were flexible, having already cancelled our planned two day stay in Hong Kong and having accepted a last minute change of flights within Europe due the airline involved reducing flights.

Wed 11^th

We left Tullamarine and headed to Hong Kong airport where we will transit to Frankfurt. We had access to the Airport lounges, these were largely empty as were the airports. We did have our temperature taken as we transited through Hong Kong. During the onward flight to Frankfurt the US announced the closure of its boarders to all European travels, would Australia follow suit? The US decision immediately had consequences, resulting in massive cancellations on our flight to Frankfurt that saw it only half full! As we arrived in Amsterdam from Frankfurt the Netherland Gov announced the closure of all museums and galleries! Oops!

Neighbourhood House Victoria Community Development Award for their Resilient Refugee Youth program.
This project improves the quality of life for young, newly arrived refugees by teaming them up with a Mentor who is responsive to their individual
needs, providing them with guidance and assistance to achieve their personal, educational and professional aspirations.

International Women's Day at Moonee Valley

Members of our club joined with some of our supportive sponsors and students from Mount Alexander College in this year's revamped International Women's Day breakfast.
Held at the magnificent Clocktower venue and supported by all the Rotary Clubs in Moonee Valley, participants were treated to 4 outstanding speakers who shared their experiences and motivation to overcome disadvantage/difficulties in participating in or working in a sporting arena.

Michelle Errichello, Nawab Hersi, Melissa Ensink and Maria Englezakis all had different issues and challenges but powered through to success. Hearing their stories was motivational for all of us, not just the students.

Thank you to Moonee Valley Council, and particularly Mayor Samantha Byrne and Councillors Nicole Marshall, Rebecca Gauci Maurici, Narelle Sharpe and Andrea Surace, and the council and Clocktower staff.

Intergenerational Multicultural Choir

The Intergenerational Multicultural Choir meets to sing and enjoy each others company on Thursday mornings at the Kensington Neighbourhood Centre at 18 Anthony Street in Kensington, near the Town Hall. The purpose is to bring together people of all ages and from all cultural backgrounds through the joy of song. Led by experienced Choir Mistress Ruth Kennedy, the participants enjoy singing a range of songs, interacting with each other and watching the children sing and dance.

Funded for an initial 8 week trial by Flemington Kensington Rotary, applications have been made for a grant to continue the activity throughout Term 2 as well.
Addressing isolation, loneliness and the opportunity to interact with people of all ages has been well addressed with positive results.

Kensington Community Children’s Cooperative attend with 12 children and 3 staff. We also welcome 12 seniors from the Flemington Golden Age Chinese community and three local residents with an English speaking background. Participants from Gregory Lodge attend when possible however transport is an issue and attempts are being made t resolve this.

Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11am supported by Rotarians Anne H. and Anne M. the children and the seniors are enjoying the sessions - so we hope we can keep it going.

The Choir has been invited to perform at the Kensington Festival on March 29th and will also perform at our Arts Festival in late September.

This interaction at 18 Anthony Street has led to further opportunities for Rotary to become involved in other activities at the Centre that bring community members together through arts based activities.

We would love to hear from other Rotarians, family and friends and local residents who would like to come along and be involved:

Thursday mornings in March between 9am and 11:30am to enjoy some singing, meet and learn from Ruth who is great at getting people involved, have a cuppa with the seniors after the singing, enjoy the children and help build community connections and relationships.

Congratulations Matiu on being selected as one of the Impact25 in the 2019 ProBono Awards,

This playground was sourced from Lake Avenue Ocean Grove by the Rotarians at Ocean Grove led by Rod Greer.

The Sri Lankan Army assisted in the installation of this playground at Shanmuga Pre-School, Jaffna. Jaffna is in the far north west of Sri Lanka. This playground was donated by Caulfield Grammar Junior Campus last year.

Installation of playground at Kaliwanai Pre School, Mullativu

Kaliwanai Pre School, Mullativu was the site of an installation in December 3019. This playground was sourced from Club Marriott at Lyndhurst and was installed with assistance from the Sri Lankan army. Mullativu is in the far north east of Sri Lanka in a very remote area.

MAC Awards Night

AAnne Heyes and Lesley McCarthy attended the Mount alexander College Awards night on December 16th. MAC are a Corporate Member of our club and annually we provide extensive support to the school and students. Lesley presented the second Del King Award to Zebib Gebreslase assisted by Del's widower Sean McConville. Haniyah Abdou Said, the inaugural recipient was also on hand to congratulate Zebib. It ws a pleasant surtprise to meet up with Del's parents, Pat and Peter King who had travelled from Yarrawonga to see AJ McConville graduate.

Another delightful award on the night was that of the Caltex All Rounder Award to a Year 12 student: this went to Aziza Sawiz who was our club's NYSF student in January this year. Aziza was bvery pleased with her ATAR and hopes to study psychology next year.

Launch of the Trio Bike

November 20th found Lesley, Lyn and Jules and Beate join Matu Bush and special guests at Gregory Lodge for the formal launch of the Trio Bike.

The Minister for Suburban Planning Marlene Kairouz formally launched the bike and acknowledge Pick My Project and Rotary in the funding and initiation of the project. Gregory Lodge have agreed to house the bike and organise volunteers and residents for rides. Many thanks to Joanna and Eleanor for their support.
Jules Borghouts was magnificent as the Pilot for the day, with Ken, one of the residents having a wonderful time whizzing around the streets as the sole passenger. He chatted happily with everyone and was keen to be interviewed. ABC News attended and filmed much of the riding as well as interviews. It was a fun and celebrator event. Looking forward to seeing the bike around the streets soon.

Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington Foundation

The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington has established a foundation to manage and disburse funds raised through their two Opportunity Shops. This foundation is a registered company and has received registration as a charity from the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission effective 26 September 2019.

The Trustees for the Foundation are: Lesley McCarthy, Peter Donnellan and Lyn Borghouts.

All requests for funding/support from the foundation must be submitted in writing through a member of the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington and will be considered at a monthly meeting. Criteria for support are those identified by the ACNC for benevolent need. The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington Foundation also requires all project claims to adhere to the goals and areas of focus identified by Rotary International.

Ascot Vale West Primary School Sensory Garden

Today we held the first working bee at Ascot Vale West Primary School.

The plan is to create a sensory garden to surround the new Buddy Bench,
and create an enjoyable space for children to sit, chat and enjoy the fragrances.

This project has been supported by a Rotary District 9800 Foundation Grant.

The end result looks amazing.

Vance Hilton Memorial Tie presented to Camp Getaway

On Sunday August 11th, members from the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington ventured to Camp Getaway for a special presentation.

Joining District Governor Grant Hocking and members of the District Support Team, Lesley McCarthy and Olga Hilton presented the framed Vance Hilton tie to Ken Maxfield for display at the camp.

During his District Governor's year, Vance made the refurbishment and improvement of Camp Getaway his project. After the District Assembly at Bendigo that year, attendees travelled to the camp and all the Presidents planted a tree lining the entrance driveway.

New Playground installed at Ampara

It is with immense delight we were advised that the first playground from the recent container to Sri Lanka has been installed and officially unveiled today. This playground has been placed at a children's play area in Ampara, about 360 km east of Columbo.

The formal ceremony was conducted by President Dr. Rohana Dayaratne of the Rotary Club of Ampara in the presence of President Sarav Soundar of the Rotary Club of Columbo, Past District Governor Senake Ameresinghe and PP Pubudu De Zoysa Chairman of District 3220 projects as well as Urban Council dignitaries and a large number of Rotarians.

This playground was extracted from the Quantin Binnah park in Werribee.

District Award for Community Service

At the District Governor's Changeover luncheon on June 30th, The Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington was presented with a District award for Community Service.

This award was presented for the Flem-Ken Festival of Arts and Ideas held in October 2018 which connected the community through arts.

The commentary read:

For the creative impact on the wider community which celebrated and connected people through arts.

The magnitude and quality of this event meant that there were activities for all ages, demographics, interests and residents who experienced all genres of the arts.

President Lesley McCarthy accepted the award from District Governor Bronwyn Stephens.

Getting their hands dirty and learning how to plant were part of the fun for the students who helped renew the gardens at the school at an after school working bee in April.

Kensington Festival

This year's Kensington Festival was bigger and better than ever, despite not hosting the Unity Cup.

The Kensington Association had an excellent response to participants with a wide range of stalls, entertainment, activities and centres of interest.

Boomerang Bags, the Compost Hub, the repair hub, an animal farm/petting zoo, lots of food stalls and musical events, stilt walkers and entertainment made sure there was something for everyone.
